Know thy skin type
Sometimes it’s the most basic of beauty necessities that are the hardest to master. But thankfully, there’s a simple way to figure out your actual skin type.
Press tissue paper into your clean dry face, twiddle your thumbs for a full hour, then “read” the Rorschach test of splotches and smudges. If there are no smears on the tissue whatsoever and your complexion is generally spot-free and up to snuff, then congrats, you’re “normal”, so to speak. However, if your face feels uncomfortably taut, it’s time to get moisturising. If the tissue is slick with sebum along the T-Zone, chances are you have combination skin.
No pout is that sexy
Pursing of your puckers is only going to exacerbate the expression lines around your lips. The best thing to do is make a conscious effort to stop sulking and smirking.
Also, invest in a good preventative lip treatment, stat. Nothing says age like a pair of crinkly lips.
Are you wiping your way to wrinkles?
A specific step in the cleansing process may be the startling source of creases and crinkles. The curious culprit? That cheap terrycloth towel most of us use to dislodge the dirt and debris at the end of the day.
While a bath towel’s fuzzy fibres may be superb for sloughing dead skin and wicking water off damp skin, the friction created by those very same fibres can result in expression lines – sort of like the “sleep lines” running down the side of your nose when your cheeks smoosh up against your pillow.
Instead, find something designed specifically for the face, like a Makeup Eraser from Sephora. Just remember to pat, not rub.
Take a break from the computer
There’s a burgeoning body of research suggesting that our addiction to LED light-emitting devices – think tablets, smartphones and such – may also be virulent to our visage. Signs and symptoms of screen-induced damage? Sallowness, spots and parched papery skin. Gulp.
This just goes to show sunscreen is ALWAYS a must. Enter a cutting-edge crop of super sunscreens like Dior’s Prestige White The UV Protector Youth & Radiance Rosy Glow SPF 50+ PA++++, $165, a souped-up salve that promises to protect against rapacious rays both natural and man-made. Expect more of these types of “sun creams” from our favourite beauty brands soon!
