The second day of Golden Disc Awards happened last night, and while it was a day of celebration for the artists who won awards, the mood turned somber in the middle of the show during a segment dedicated to SHINee’s Jonghyun, who was found dead last month.
While most year-end shows opted for a video tribute, GDA had singer Lee Hi perform after a video. The YG Entertainment singer sang one of her hit songs, “Breathe”, which was written by the late Jonghyun.
The song received an “all-kill” on real-time charts when it was released, which means it topped all major music charts in Korea. After Jonghyun’s death, the song climbed back on the charts.
But when Lee Hi first received the song, she didn’t know it was written by Jonghyun. She only found out through Epik High’s Tablo, who was co-producing her album, that Jonghyun was the creator of the song.
The song is about being able to sympathise with others, including strangers, just by watching them breathe or sigh.
She said during a previous interview that while he didn’t meet her during the recording, he gave her comments on how to emote various parts of the song after she sent him the track.
When she sang the song live at GDA, she paused halfway and turned her back to the audience to control her emotions. She then clutched on to a button on her dress when she couldn’t continue singing. It took her a while for her to regain her composure before finishing the song.
Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon, who was seated in the artists’ section, broke down as she watched Lee Hi’s emotional performance.
She later said during an Instagram live that she wanted to pat Lee Hi on the back for putting up such a great performance.
