Sapporo Yuki Matsuri in Japan

Good fun is the name of the game at the Sapporo Snow Festival. Think life-size ice and snow sculptures, ice-skating and snowboarding, and yummy tummy-warming food. Sugoi ne.
Thaipusam in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
While the Hindu celebration also takes place here, it is most spectacular at the Batu Caves – which even if you haven’t been to must have surely heard of. Brace yourself for sensory overload, and you can easily go and return in the same day or make it a weekend trip.

Can’t stop eating your way through Hong Kong? Torch some calories at the largest outdoor sporting event there. The weather will also be perfect to work up a sweat, which is always nice.
Hoi An Lantern Festival, Vietnam
10 & 11 Feb
The UNESCO World Heritage Site honours full moon nights on a monthly basis. During this time, the streets will be filled with games, food and music – and colourful paper lanterns the town is famous for, of course.
