Let’s be honest, when it comes to Korean dramas, it’s not only the plot that’s important – we care about who’s acting in it too. All the better if they’re eye candies, right?
It’s this perception that drives directors to cast idols, who not only have the looks, but also the fan base. But idol actors often have a stigma of “foot acting” (or awkward acting) attached to them even before they can deliver their first line. However, some of them have proved their abilities, garnering critical acclaim for their acting chops. These five actors will make you question the stigma with the new dramas.

The drama sees a star-studded cast, including Cha Tae Hyun and Yoon Si Yoon.
CNBLUE’s Lee Jung Shin – My Sassy Girl
CNBLUE is indeed a band of actors. He may be the last member to start an acting career, but that doesn’t mean he’s any less talented. 2PM’s Chansung – Suspicious Partner (Love in Trouble), Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim (Dr Romantic), Queen for 7 Days
If you’re not familiar with 2PM, you might probably only recognise Taecyeon as the actor of the group, but Chansung has, in fact, been acting even before the group’s debut. In these two years alone, he has had four dramas to his name. If you enjoy watching medical-themed dramas, consider Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim. Go for Suspicious Partner for a rom-com, and Queen for 7 Days if you prefer a historical drama.
SHINee’s Key – The Guardians
SHINee’s Minho might be known as the actor in the group, but Key is set to share the title after landing a lead role in The Guardians, in which he’s acting as a hacker. The 25-year-old is already known as a “triple threat” for his dancing, singing and rapping abilities, and is also known to be a proficient emcee.
