In this day and age, anyone with Internet literacy and access can become a blogger. After all, creating a blog is so easy! But what differentiates a normal blogger from a social media influencer is not just how popular they are, but also how they engage their audience. And, of course, the influence has to be positive. It’s not an easy job, and Andrea Chong can attest to that. We spoke to the local social media influencer on how she came into the job and what keeps her going.

1. How would you describe your typical day?
My day starts with taking my boyfriend Imran to work, and then I [usually] have to rush off to a meeting. Sometimes, I also have a lunch meeting as well and quite often, I would rush off in the afternoon to pick up samples for a shoot that same day. Some nights, I might have an event on, while on other nights, I like to try and catch up with friends over dinner. My day usually ends on my computer, updating my blog and editing photos.

2. How did you come into the job/how did you start?
I actually started off working as a model and really loved fashion. I wanted a website to display some of my recent jobs and outfits. All of a sudden, it had an audience, who wanted to see more and more. [That was how] began.

3. What’s the best thing about your job? What about the worst thing?
The best thing would be that I am doing what I love! I meet amazing people on a daily basis, I get to travel, [and] I get to work from all over the world. No two days are ever the same for me. The worst thing… I don’t really have a specific thing. Perhaps [the fact] that it can be a lot of work sometimes—but I don’t necessarily mind this—[and] can just get a little stressful at times.

4. What qualities are need to be a good blogger/social influencer and how does one get her name out there?
For starters, being a blogger is not easy. You have to be diligent and hard-working. It’s not a 9-to-5 job—it literally does not stop. I work when I am away, I work on the weekends, [and] I work all night sometimes, so you have to be committed and passionate. Being able to multi-task also helps. I think to blog full-time, you have to be able to wear a lot of different hats. Some days I am out directing a shoot, then I am driving to pick up samples, I am editing work, I am fixing glitches on my computer, I will host an event, while trying to update my Instagram account. One can try and get their name out there by pinpointing what their niche is, what they are good at and what they enjoy doing the most. From doing this, you will be able to find appropriate networks to help you expand and get your name known in these circles. Also, find a great agent, become known to them [and] find out what they are looking for when they take on bloggers/social influencers.

5. What advice can you give to someone who wants to be a social influencer?
Ultimately, you need to love what you do. You need to find what you’re passionate about and have direction. You need to be confident and not be afraid of failing and you must always try and push yourself to try new things.
