Kai is proof that you should never judge an engineer by his or her cover—he’s scaled mountains, hits up music festivals and is a roller coaster junkie.
He’s not a typical engineer
No shade to engineers, but even Kai confirms they do largely carry the stereotype of being “boring or nerdy”. This adrenaline junkie/nature lover felt like he didn’t quite fit in during his university days, and even now, has people thinking he works in the media industry. But he loves what he does: “I like how engineers can fix everything… or at least people think they can.”
Looking at architecture is a job hazard
As a civil engineer whose job involves building infrastructure, it’s become a habit for Kai to look at buildings and how they are supported. His personal favourite in Singapore is JW Marriott South Beach (“I like how the architecture combines greenery and sustainability”) and also admires the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

His favourite city is in the US
While he loves the West Coast for the nature (Kai is an avid hiker who’s conquered Kinabalu), New York City gets his vote. His preconception of the Big Apple was from the movies, but seeing it in real life and watching people en route to work gave him the impression that it’s a city where dreams are made.
He loves to bake…
Chocolate cake is his go-to. Since he was a child, Kai would ask his mum to get an oven, but she only caved when he was in JC. Between university lessons, he would bake cakes, and even bread for his mother. “It’s a stress reliever. I eat the calories, and then I burn them off!”
…But won’t bake on a first date
Kai thinks it’s too full on to present baked goods on the first date, but is game to show off his baking skills by the second date. For a first meeting, he’d suggest a hike or a walk along Henderson Waves, before finishing off with dinner at Alexandra Food Centre. “They have the best avocado milkshake with gula melaka.”

His favourite coach on The Voice is Miley Cyrus
A lover of music, he’s currently into indie music and EDM, and will be heading to Ultra in Miami this year. “I like to discover music on Spotify,” he says. He used to watch The Voice on TV, and Miley gets his buzzer because “she provides good insight and I found that she was a good trainer.”
His motto in life was on his dating app bio
He’s not a fan of dating apps, believing the connections to be transient (“you’re just one of so many”). That being said, when he was on them, his bio was short and succinct. “It was ‘Insatiable’,” he laughs. “I feel like it applies in all circumstances, not just in dating. In life, nothing is enough. You shouldn’t think ‘I’m good for now.’ It’s about keeping an open mind, and constantly taking in more knowledge.”
