When Fenty Beauty launched, ION Sephora was one of the top-selling stores worldwide – so we are pretty sure that about seven out of 10 of you have a highlighter or foundation from the range. But there are ways of using the Match Stix that we hadn’t even considered. Lucky for us, Hector Espinal (@artbyhector) aka Rihanna’s hand-selected FENTY Beauty Global Makeup Artist, is here to educate us.
Congratulations on being selected as Rihanna’s Global Makeup Artist! We hear it was quite an audition process!
Thank you! Being a former Sephora pro artist helped a lot. The process was truly amazing! There were rounds of intensive makeup applications, recreations of fashion week looks, on-camera interviews and how-tos, and creating Rihanna’s designated look. We were given extremely tight and short time frames to produce a look. The last round was my favourite! I had the pleasure of having Rihanna as my model! (No pressure.) I had to create three looks on her.
Do you have any hints for making application flawless?
The Matte Match Stix are my JAM! I like to first warm up the formula on the back of my hands before applying to the skin. Since they are a cream to powder formula, warming up is key to a flawless application.
Other than on the cheekbone, what are some of your favourite ways to use the Match Stix?
Apply it directly on to the lids and lower lash lines. Diffuse using your fingers or favourite blending blush, then set it using Invisimatte. For my light skin-toned clients, I love using the shade “Amber”.
[Ed’s note: We are also obsessed with this version using “Mocha” on the eyelids, with a little Trophy Wife for highlight.]

If you have a medium to tan skin tone, the Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in “Confetti” is a must! This iridescent lavender shade is super flattering. Apply on the center of lids, tear duct, and high points on the face. It’s a trendy and fun look.
For deeper skin tones Match Stix Shimmer Skinsticks in “Ridic” and “Chili Mango” are super flattering blush shades. It adds a subtle natural flush to the skin.

Do you have any other special tips and tricks for using the products?
All formulas blend and melt into the skin so effortlessly. Try using the precision sponge damp to apply when layering the formulas. It will allow you to blend with ease.
What is your personal favorite product and why?
I have so many! One of my favorites are the Match Stix Matte Skinsticks. I consider it my multi-purpose go-to product. Great for concealing, contour, highlight or a simple touch up stick. The cream to powder formula just melts into the skin effortlessly… Another one of my favourites are the blotting sheets. They are easy, chic and effective. I use it when I’m out in the city or even before a selfie.
