Ever wondered why Singapore Airlines stewardesses always look their best on their job? Former SQ girl Valerie tells us their secrets.
Hand cream is a must
Since the air in the cabin is dehydrating, and air stewardesses wash their hands a lot, they always use hand cream to keep their hands soft. Even stewards use it!
Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Intensive Moisturizing Hand Treatment
Spray on facial mist
This helps to keep your skin hydrated when the air is dry.

Drink lots of water
Yes, the tip you’ve been reading for the past 10 years is still relevant. Drinking enough fluids will also ensure your skin looks hydrated.
Put on lip gloss before lipstick
While most people put on lip balm before lipstick, some SQ girls prefer lip gloss to keep their puckers moisturised throughout the flight.

Don’t use too much hair spray
If you have a bob cut, blow dry your hair using a large round brush, then shape with hair clay, before spraying lightly to set it. Don’t spray too much or your hair will look flat and heavy!

Bring a nail polish out for touchups
The secret to their perfect-looking manicure? Touchups. Valerie says due to the nature of their work, even gel polishes can get chipped sometimes. If your nail is chipped, you don’t have to remove and reapply new coats of colour – just fix the chip and you’re good to go. Do a proper touchup when you’re at the hotel or, in your case, at home.

Use lip liner when putting on red lipstick
This helps to prevent the colour from bleeding or feathering. Stains from red lipsticks take a bit of effort to remove and since stewardesses can’t spend too much time on touchups (they touch up their makeup thrice during long-haul flights), prevention is better than cure.

Let your skin breathe
On their days off, most SQ girls don’t put on makeup so their skin can take a break. If they’re working on long-haul flights, stewardesses can have makeup on for as long as 15 hours. So, letting your skin breathe in between flights is important.

Let your nails take a breather too
While it’s nice to always see colours on your nails, you gotta let them breathe or they’ll be weak and prone to breaking. When they’re not wearing red nails on the job, most SQ girls don’t wear nail polish. Valerie swears by Sally Hansen’s Hard As Nails to strengthen her nails since she started flying.
Use time-saving items
Valerie loves Sephora’s Instant Nail Polish Remover that allows her to remove nail polish and do quick touchups at hotels. Fast-drying top coats such as Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat are preferred because ain’t nobody got time to wait forever for your nails to dry.
