It’s common to have under-eye bags when you’re older—you might have noticed puffiness around your mum’s eyes and how her eyelids have started to droop.

According to Dr Gerard Ee from The Clifford Clinic, there are three types of under-eye bags: Type I refers to mild under-eye bags that are only visible when you look up; Type II happens when fats accumulate in a semi-circle under the eyes and is prominent when you look ahead; and Type III, when there’s an accumulation of fat that makes the eyes look swollen and tired all the time.

There are many factors that contribute to under-eye bags. A lack of sleep is not the only culprit—genetics, allergies, stress and collagen loss also play a part. And while piling on expensive eye creams might help your mum keep the eye bags at bay, in some cases, even a $500 cream might not help if her condition is severe (like if she has Type III under-eye bags).

If the under-eye bags and droopy lids are really bothering her, The Clifford Clinic offers a range of treatments that might help. Don’t worry, there are no knives involved. In fact, Dr Ee says the treatments involve no downtime, pain, scars or risks.

Blogger Joanna took her mum to The Clifford Clinic after her mum raised concerns about the under-eye bag on her left eye.

After a consultation with Dr Ee, she was recommended The Clifford Eye Bag Protocol, which involves two treatments: Secret RF and AGNES RF. The combo is “specially designed to stimulate and remodel collagen and address the common signs of ageing,” says Dr Ee.

What is Secret RF?

Before the treatment, Dr Ee administered local anaesthesia to numb the area. He then used the Secret RF machine, which has a microcannula (a really tiny needle that doesn’t have a sharp tip) that punctures the skin to deliver radiofrequency energy to break down the fat cells that make up eye bags. The treatment also stimulates collagen production and tightens the skin for a lifting effect.

What is AGNES RF?

Dr Ee followed up with the AGNES RF treatment, which uses radiofrequency energy to target fat tissue and tighten the skin. This helps to decrease the size of the eye bags.

Are there side effects?

Your mum can expect slight bruising for the first five days. Joanna’s mum saw that her swelling subsided after three days, but she didn’t feel any pain—just tightness. However, she should avoid swimming or doing vigorous exercises for a week after the treatment.

When can I see the results?

As with all treatments, it differs according to individuals, but your mum can expect to see best results one to two months after the treatment. If she’s lucky, she can see results in as soon as two weeks.

Will the eye bags disappear forever?

Unfortunately, there’s no such thing as “forever” in life, much less for aesthetic treatments. Once you’ve undergone treatment for eye bag removal in Singapore, the benefits typically last from three to five years, but again, it differs according to individuals and factors such as family history and how much effort you put in taking care of your skin. Dr Ee clarifies that while the fat won’t grow back once it’s removed, the ageing process continues, so you might still have eye bags as you age. “The skin around the eyes is very thin. Smoking, excessive drinking and sun exposure can greatly speed up the ageing process,” he warns.

But I’m too young to get under-eye bags, right?

Under-eye bags are more common among older folks, but that doesn’t mean millennials don’t get eye bags. “I also have patients in their 20s who are starting to have early eye bags,” says Dr Ee. Yes, you can opt for the same treatments as your mum, but it’s best to consult with Dr Ee first to find out which treatments suit you best.

I have oily/dry/combination skin. Can I go for this treatment?

Both the Secret RF and AGNES RF are suitable for all skin types. This is because the delivery of radiofrequency energy is tailored to the skin type and concerns of each patient. The superficial part of the skin called the epidermis is spared because [the treatment involves] applying precisely-controlled RF energy directly into various depths of the skin. This means that even patients who are not suitable for laser treatments can [undergo Secret RF and AGNES RF],” says Dr Ee. He adds that the treatment is also suitable for all skin tones.

The Clifford Eye Bag Protocol costs $2,500 and is available at The Clifford Clinic at #01-03 Clifford Centre, 24 Raffles Place.
