How many moisturisers have you gone through in your search to find the most epic one? In my quest to find a solution that provides adequate hydration while addressing the occasional spot of dryness, flakiness and redness, I’ve personally lost count.
With so many products on the market, it’s hard to know where to even start. But cutting through the noise is the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, a cult favourite among skincare junkies that’s also the CLEO Clear Skin Awards 2019 winner for Best Moisturiser for Normal Skin. Has my search finally ended? Only one way to find out.
Reformulated with new technology that can keep skin moisturised for up to 72 hours, the re-launched Moisture Surge promises to keep fine lines, flakiness and tightness from dehydration at bay. This unique Auto-Replenishing function uses hyaluronic acid to instantly boost the skin’s moisture levels by up to 152%. At the same time, ingredients such as activated aloe water provide non-stop hydration.
Regular use will strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier so it’s better able to lock in hydration, leaving you with fresh, plumped, and healthy-looking skin. Now these are the complexion goals I’m talking about!
Another thing about the product that left me impressed: it’s a multitasker. On top of being a moisturiser, it can be used as a mask (which I tried and will talk about later), as a cuticle treatment, to tame frizzy hair, to hydrate dry spots instantly (on top of makeup too!) and to get rid of ashy knees, an area which most people neglect to care for. And if you’re a highlighter kind of girl, you can dab this product along the high points of your cheeks and brow bone to make them “pop”. It can also be used to sheer out products like bronzer. Want a super subtle sun-kissed look? Mix this with your liquid bronzer before applying.
With all the benefits that it promised, I was curious to find out how it would fare.
Tried and tested
I don’t ask for much when it comes to my skincare, since my complexion is relatively clear and even-toned. It only acts up if I haven’t been getting enough sleep or if I’m stressed—which results in very dry, flaky skin around my T-zone, specifically on my eyelids, near my brows and around my nose. These spots also become inflamed every now and then.
I’m looking for a moisturiser that tackles all these issues, so it should provide intense hydration. At the same time, it should be light and not leave an oily sheen. Clinique’s Moisture Surge nailed it on this front. The airy, gel-like cream has a super cooling effect when applied to the skin, and my face feels instantly soothed and hydrated after massaging the product in, disappearing into the skin without leaving any trace!
To put it to the ultimate test, I used Moisture Surge on one of my “bad skin days” and was surprised to find that it was able to get rid of the flakiness. It even calmed my inflamed skin—while the effect wasn’t immediate, the redness did subside about an hour after application. I was impressed, as the redness usually persists for a lot longer.
Although it’s supposed to offer 72 hours of hydration, I re-applied it every morning to ensure my skin stayed sufficiently hydrated throughout the day. After all, I work in an air-conditioned office and anyone who does so certainly need all the hydration they can get! And the great thing about this moisturiser is that it also works beyond the surface, so even though you might not see any traces of moisturiser left after cleansing, good things are happening under the surface layer.
I also tried using the moisturiser as a quick-fix mask—a trick recommended by Clinique. Right after a shower, I applied a thicker-than-usual layer on my face and left it on for five minutes. Not only did it feel extremely soothing and hydrating, I discovered that it was able to reduce any redness more effectively.
The CLEO verdict
A solid choice that won’t let you down, the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator offers the best of both worlds. It’s intensely moisturising yet doesn’t leave that unsightly greasy finish. I’d defo recommend this to those who have the same skin concerns as me. Here’s to a future of flake-free skin!
