The Differences Among Lipstick, Lip Gloss And All Other Lip Products

How do you choose a lip colour? Before you delve into trends and skin tones, you first need to know the differences among the types of lip colours available in the market. Yes, there are differences in both appearance and texture (it’s not a marketing hoax to get you to buy more products), whether big or small. Here are nine types of lip colours in the market.

1. Lipstick

This is usually pigmented, especially if it comes in a matte formula. If you have dry lips, opt for a moisturising formula like the Maquillage Dramatic Melting Rouge, an oil-based lippy for a kissable pout.

2. Lip gloss

A lip gloss tends to be less pigmented (as compared to lip creams, but more on that later) so it’s best for those who are looking for a more subtle look. We like the Chanel LÈVRES SCINTILLANTES that comes with a hint of shimmer for a subtly glam look.

3. Lip rouge

Lip rouge marries the pigmented quality of lipsticks and shine of lip glosses. This is great and more convenient alternative to layering lipstick with gloss. Try the Maquillage Essence Glamorous Rouge NEO that comes with a curved brush for easy application.

4. Lip stain

Most lip stains come in a marker-like form, which allows you to control the intensity of colours. Dab a few layers of colour for a more pigmented finish. Stila’s Lip And Cheek Stain can be used both as a lip colour and blusher!

5. Lip cream

A lip cream has a texture similar to a lip rouge, but it’s creamier and less glossy. Some of them dry to a matte finish, so if you’re looking for a “liquid lipstick”, this is your best bet. One awesome example is the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream.

6. Lip balm

These usually are formulated to treat dry, chapped lips, but you can kill two birds with one stone with tinted lip balms that add a hint of colour to your pout. Fresh’s Tinted Lip Treatment comes in a plethora of colours that makes us go giddy with joy.

7. Lip liner

This is used to line your lips for a more defined pout. Some may suggest applying it all over your lips for a longer-lasting colour and though that is not advisable, ensure that you apply a lot of lip balm prior to doing so. Our vote goes to the MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil.

8. Lip pencil

This is like the jumbo version of lip liner, but unlike the latter, this is supposed to be applied on your puckers. Most lip pencils are moisturising and glide on smoothly to give you kissable lips. They’re almost as pigmented as lipstick and offers more control. NARS Lip Pencil comes in three formulae: Satin, Velvet Matte and Velvet Gloss.

9. Lip tint

This is probably a Korean girl’s fave. Unlike a gloss, a tint is more watery and is usually dabbed only on the inner, centre part of the lips to create a gradation effect, though it can also be used all over. Laneige Water Drop Tint is one of our fave ‘cos it affords us the gradation effect sans the dryness.
