Why Your BB Cushion Puff Could Be Causing Breakouts And How To Clean It
We all know how amazing BB cushion foundations are. After all, our favourite K-pop stars and celebs swear by them and use them to achieve a glowing complexion.
But just like makeup brushes and beauty sponges that we use daily, these puff need to be cleaned too. Consider this: the moisture of the cushion foundation, mixed with the sebum from our skin together with the humidity of Singapore’s climate make for the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi—exactly what you don’t want on your skin. But, we’ve got your back. Here are a few ways to keep you your BB cushion puff clean.

Use micellar water
If micellar water is your preferred method of makeup removal, you can use in place of an oil cleanser to clean the cushion puff too. Saturate the dry puff with micellar water till it is wet but not dripping and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Finally, push any stubborn foundation out before rinsing thoroughly with water. We like Bioderma’s range of micellar water for its effective yet gentle approach at removing makeup.
Blitz it in a microwave
If you want to go the extra mile to keep your puff clean, place it a (microwave-safe) bowl with just enough water to cover the puff. Blitz it in 10-second intervals till the water is steaming but not boiling. Leave to cool to room temperature before removing.
Spritz it with alcohol
No, not the kind you drink. The kind we’re talking about is disinfecting alcohol or rubbing alcohol like the ICM Pharma Rubbing Alcohol, $5.50. A spritz before putting it back in the case, will give that extra clean feel. You can also, give the case a wipe down with alcohol to remove any residual oils and bacteria.
Give it an oil cleanse
Just like your skin, your BB cushion foundation puff needs to be gently cleansed with oil first. Start by wetting your puff with water. Afterwards, put a thin layer of oil cleanser all over it and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This process melts away leftover foundation and makeup particles. Finally squeeze out all the gunk and rinse thoroughly with water.
We like Fancl’s Mild Cleansing Oil which is great for a gentle clean that really gets all the impurities out.
Double cleanse with face wash or brush cleanser
As it turns out, double cleansing isn’t just for your skin, it’s great for your BB puff too. Washing your puff with cleanser or a brush cleaner can help get rid of other makeup debris that could potentially clog your pores and leave you with a nasty breakout.
Whatever you use, make sure it’s gentle (and that you’re gentle too!) so that your puff doesn’t lose its shape or texture. We like Shiseido’s new Waso Quick Gentle Cleanser which foams without water and removes impurities and makeup.
Rinse with hot water
Once you’re done cleansing, rinse your puff under warm water. This will help to disinfect it and give it a proper, final cleanse.
Dry it with a kitchen towel
Gently press your puff into a kitchen towel to get rid of excess water. Then leave the puff to air dry — you’ll find it will end up softer than when you first bought it!
Cleaning your makeup tools at least once a week is a good way to keep breakouts at bay, but if you’re really lazy, once every two weeks is also OK.
