We have to admit, EXO’s Baekhyun’s eye makeup game is stronger than ours. Before you roll your eyes and scoff that applying eyeliner is not that difficult, we’ll have you know that the K-pop idol doesn’t just apply eyeliner – he has the full works going on.
From rocking burgundy eyes to pulling off the smokey look, he’s got us wanting to emulate his eye makeup every time he appears on the red carpet or on stage. Which is why, we couldn’t help but steal a few tricks and tips from him. PS: It works best for those with hidden double eyelids like Baekhyun.
Brown eyeshadow is your best friend
Brown is the most versatile eyeshadow colour. Forget 50 Shades of Grey – shades of brown is the only thing that’s relevant when it comes to eyeshadow. Whether you’re going for a natural look or smokey effect, you can achieve it all with brown hues. Baekhyun seems to be an avid believer of this trick because most of the time, he’s seen sporting brown eyeshadow.
Go for burgundy
A makeup artist once revealed on a show that Baekhyun made burgundy eyeshadow trendy in South Korea after he wore it to Seoul Music Awards. Not a lot of people – even us ladies – can pull off burgundy, but he did it to perfection. We reckon his secret lies in the eyeliner – he rimmed his eyes with black liner for a smokey effect to avoid looking puffy-eyed.

Apply eyeliner on your lower lash line
While most K-pop male idols wear eyeliner to open up their peepers, most of them avoid the lower lash lines. And that’s what differentiates Baekhyun’s eye makeup from the rest – he’s liberal with eyeliner both on the upper and lower lash lines. Here’s a tip: if you’re going for a strong smokey effect, apply eyeliner along the whole length of your lash line. However, if you want something more natural, or if you’re using a bright eyeshadow colour like burgundy, then only apply on the outer half of the lash line.
Don’t go crazy with the wing
While winged eyeliners can help to give droopy eyes an instant lift, that might not always be the effect you want, especially if your eyeshadow is already dark or dramatic. Baekhyun stops his eyeliner right at the end of his lash line, and relies on eyeshadow for the lifting effect. Find out how in the next point.
Go soft on the edges instead of creating a defined line
Skip the defined edges and blend till you create soft edges. This not only softens the look, but also makes your eyes look bigger instead of longer, since you’re blending upwards. The soft edges also look better if you have hidden double eyelids.
Don’t be afraid of black eyeshadow
Many people are daunted by black eyeshadow and most only opt to use it only as eyeliner. However, you can – and should – use black eyeshadow, especially if you’re going for the smokey effect. A little goes a long way, so don’t be heavy-handed during application, and just apply on the outer corners of your eyes. Unless you’re going for the Avril Lavigne look, avoid applying the colour all over your lids. Blend towards your crease line and inwards to not only soften the colour, but also get rid of harsh lines. We like how Baekhyun’s makeup artist paired it with bronze for a softer smokey effect.
