Last week, we held another session of CLEO Par-tea—this time, with Korean beauty brand HERA. Their products won for three categories for the recent CLEO Clear Skin Awards 2019, and their trainer Rowena Chan joined us at SPRMRKT at Robertson Quay to dish out tips on nailing the K-Beauty look.

Layer, layer, layer
Many swear by the renowned Korean 10-step skincare routine. The thing is, it can take a while and involves lots of products. One way around this is to use a multitasking product that provides the benefits of more than one step. Enter the HERA Cell Essence. By layering this essence three times, you can skip the toner and ampoule (which are supposed to come before and after the essence step in the routine). Here’s how to do it.
First layer: Soak HERA’s dual-sided cotton pad in the essence then apply to skin. The cotton pad has a mesh side that’s great for exfoliation, but avoid using it every day as it might be too harsh for your skin. You can, however, use the other side daily.
Second layer: Use your hands to apply a thin layer. This promotes the absorption of subsequent products.
Third layer: Use your hands again to apply this layer. The Cell Essence provides hydration, which is essential for all skin types. After all, even oily skin can get dehydrated.
Tip: Need to prep your skin for a special event but ran out of mask? Soak a few cotton pads in the Cell Essence then let them sit on your face for a mask-like effect. This helps prep your skin for the rest of your skincare regime and makeup.
Hydrate and let it sit
Next, apply HERA Aquabolic Hydro Pearl Serum, the Clear Skin Awards 2019 winner for Best Moisture-replenishing Serum for Dry Skin. It not only provides a dose of hydration, but also improves your moisture barrier to lock in all the goodness. (Be sure to apply it in swiping motions instead of massaging it in, as the latter method might cause wrinkles.) Let it sit on your skin for about two to three minutes before moving on to the next step—this allows the product to penetrate into your skin and prevents your skin from looking too oily.
Seal it with a cream
Use the HERA Rosy-Satin Cream to seal in moisture and leave a satin and radiant finish.
Tip: Applying creams and serums can help lower the temperature of your skin, which will make your makeup adhere to your skin better. This cream also has a velvety finish, which is the best texture to apply makeup on.
Protect against blue light
After moisturising, it’s time to apply sun protection. HERA Sun Mate Excellence in Rosy Glow is the winner for Best Sunscreen for City Skin, and it’s not hard to see why. It protects your skin from not only sun rays, but also damaging blue light from your phone and computer screens. Remember to apply on your neck, the back of your neck, and chest.
Even out your skin tone
Next, prep skin with HERA Magic Starter. It comes in four colours: rose brightens all skin tones; lavender makes the skin look less sallow; mint counters redness; while shimmery white contains pearl pigments to double up as a strobing product. This primer not only makes your makeup last longer, but also prevents your foundation from oxidising.
Apply cushion the right way
When using the HERA Black Cushion, apply a thin layer, especially over facial contours. Then, apply more on areas that require more coverage, usually in the middle of the face. Want a natural finish? Use a foundation brush instead of a puff. If you want to contour/highlight the Korean way, use a cushion that’s a shade or two darker to apply on areas that need contouring for a more natural-looking finish.
Tip: When using the puff, use three fingers to hold it and pat on lightly, but many times. This creates an “airbrushed” finish. For a poreless finish on your nose, use a bit more force when patting on to conceal pores.
Make your eye cream work harder
Never have time to apply eye cream in the morning? Mix HERA Age Away Vitalizing Eye Cream with your concealer to save time. This also helps the concealer blend into your skin better to prevent it from slipping away.
Nail that pout
To complete your look, use a liquid lipstick. The new HERA Sensual Intense comes in two finishes: Velvet and Glaze. While the Velvet one comes with a pointy-tipped applicator for precise application, the Glaze has a round applicator, designed to fill in the Cupid’s bow for a pouty look. FYI, the Sensual Intense Velvet in 339 is said to suit all Asian skin tones! PS: If you’re a BLACKPINK fan, head to the ION store to get shade 337 Red Vibe, aka Jennie’s shade!
Tip: The Sensual Intense Velvet can also double up as a blusher, so you get two products for the price of one!
