5 Times Meghan Markle’s Hair Was Not Royal-approved
Being a royal is tough. You need to be prim and proper all the time, not only in terms of behaviour, but also your looks. There are many ways that Meghan Markle isn’t your average royal, but there’s one that particularly sticks out because it’s so relatable. On multiple royal outings, the royal bride-to-be ditched the professional prim and proper look for a low-slung messy bun, flyaways and all. It’s a look that’s fuss-free, casual and totally befitting Meghan’s “California girl” roots, but it also breaks royal tradition.
How so? According to royal protocol, a royal’s hair should always be neat and, if it’s a bun, to be wrapped in a hairnet (see: every Kate Middleton hairstyle ever). And while we absolutely adore Duchess Kate’s bouncy, voluminous blowouts and perfectly polished updos, it is refreshing to see that Meghan, 36, is carving out her own style identity within the royal sphere.
Now, check out all the times Meghan wore her hair in a messy bun while performing royal duties.
Brixton visit, 9 Jan
On her second official appearance after her engagement to Prince Harry, Meghan made headlines when she debuted the loose messy bun with wispy fringe at a visit to a local radio station in Brixton, UK.
Cardiff visit, 18 Jan
Later in January, the couple visited Cardiff in Wales, where Meghan again pulled her brunette hair back into a low tousled knot, albeit with a slightly teased crown which added a bit more volume. She was seen interacting with the crowd of mostly young school children, smiling and giving out high-fives.
Belfast visit, 24 March
In March, Meghan and Harry made a surprise visit to the windy Northern Ireland city of Belfast, where she wore a side-swept low chignon that’s super romantic and even a bit bridal-looking.
London, 19 April
As an advocate for women’s right and equality, it’s no surprise that Meghan attended the Women’s Empowerment reception that was part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). She styled her hair in her now-signature messy bun, tucking her fringe behind her ears.
London, 23 April
A few days later, Meghan and Harry stepped out in sombre black dress for the memorial service for Stephen Lawrence, a British-African youth who was murdered in a racially motivated attack 25 years ago. Meghan looked poised and elegant with her low tousled bun and wavy fringe that perfectly framed her face.
