Living in Singapore when you have dry skin can be a challenge: most hydrating moisturisers feel heavy and sticky the moment you step out of your house; and the gel textures just aren’t hydrating enough to keep your skin comfortable through long hours spent in air conditioning.
I have naturally dry skin and it gets worse if I spend too much time in air conditioning or under the sun. I’ve spent years trying to find moisturisers that fit the bill, and have had some success with face moisturisers, but little to none with body ones. And even as a Beauty Editor, moisturising my body always seems like a chore.
Given that I want to tackle my dry skin with little effort on my part, oral skincare seems like the answer to my prayers. But how effective is it, really? I tried the Clear Skin Awards 2020 winner for Best Supplement for Healthy Skin, ORBIS DEFENCERA, and here’s what I found.
The ORBIS DEFENCERA was launched after 10 years of research and development, and it is the first and only oral skincare approved by the Japanese government. It has a FOSHU (Food for Specified Health Uses) stamp of approval by the Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan, which is the equivalent of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The main ingredient in this product is DF-Ceramide, an extremely pure form of ceramide. Why is this important? Because we have ceramides in our skin. Think of them as the blanket on your skin—keeping moisture in, and pollution and irritants out. But over time, this blanket of ceramides gets worn out. The gaps in the blanket mean that it can no longer keep the moisture in, and this makes the skin dry, tight and itchy.
Enter, DF-Ceramide. This helps skin create its own ceramide to fill the gaps between skin cells, replenishing the ceramides and helping keep moisture in, and thus, the skin hydrated. Even though it is ingested, the ceramide makes it to the skin over the entire body from your face to your feet to create an “inner aqua barrier” thanks to its purity.
Tried and Tested
First off, the ORBIS DEFENCERA is really easy and convenient to take. It comes individually packed in sachets that you can carry with you, or keep both at home and at the office. You can take it anywhere, at any time. You don’t even need to mix it with water—just tear off or snip the top of a sachet, empty the contents into your mouth and you’re done.
It has a pleasant yuzu flavour which is quite tasty, and actually made me look forward to taking it. To get into the habit of consuming a sachet everyday, I decided to take it after lunch.
The powder is really fine, and just melts in your mouth which makes it great for people who don’t like taking tablets or capsules.
Taking the ORBIS DEFENCERA helps me rest easy knowing that I am taking care of my skincare barrier from within. A compromised skincare barrier can lead to irritated and sensitised skin—and no one wants that.
While I cannot claim to have given up using my moisturisers completely, I find that my skin sits better with lighter textures now that I take the ORBIS DEFENCERA on the regular (it claims that one sachet will keep your skin hydrated for 24 hours).
But as any beauty insider will tell you, using oral skincare and moisturisers are not enough to keep your skin healthy and clear. You need a well-rounded skincare routine for that and these are some of the products to include.
ORBIS Powder Wash+, $25
It easily lathers into a dense, fluffy foam that gently cleanses the skin without stripping it of its natural moisture. Enzymes Protease and Lipase quickly and effectively dissolve keratin plugs that cause congestion, leaving you with clear, refined pores that look minimised. It also has collagen, hyaluronic acid and royal jelly extract to keep your skin hydrated and firm.
ORBIS U Lotion, $30
This lotion is quickly and easily absorbed to flood skin with hydration while creating a veil of moisture. It helps to form more moisture channels in the skin cells and this in turn results in deeply hydrated and plump skin. The best part? All you need is just half a teaspoon of product after cleansing your face!
ORBIS Wrinkle White Essence, $74
Tackle pigmentation and first signs of ageing with this lightweight serum that tackles the two skincare concerns at once. Thanks to key ingredient niacinamide, it boosts collagen production, softening fine lines and helps lighten pigmentation for clear, brighter skin.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare classified the ORBIS Wrinkle White Essence as a “quasi-drug”, a cross between cosmetics and medical care, which means while it is a type of cosmetics, its ingredients has been found to reduce wrinkles and lighten pigmentation.
ORBIS Sunscreen On Face Moist, $18
No skincare routine is complete without sunscreen, and this ultra lightweight, tinted lotion brightens skin and keeps it hydrated. Its weightless veil also protects skin from UVA and UVB rays, infrared rays from the sun, and air pollutants to ensure skin is healthy and bright.
