For someone who loves makeup, I’m extremely averse to midday touchups. I prefer makeup that will stay put through the day so I don’t have to fuss with it at all. My search for a long-wearing matte lipstick that would survive an apocalypse led me to try the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit. According to reviews online, it has good staying power, is comfortable, and doesn’t dry out your lips.

The product
I tried the the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit in Head Over Heels. It’s a rich, plum shade that works well for medium skin tones and I think it’ll look good on other skin tones as well.

The Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit includes a lip liner and a matte liquid lipstick in matching shades. It’s a common beauty industry trick to layer lipstick over liner to prolong wear, so I was really hoping that this would last the entire day.

The test
I realised that the lip liner went on smooth without any pulling or tugging. After filling in the upper and lower lips with liner, I layered the the matte liquid lipstick over. It set really quickly.

Both the lip liner and the matte liquid lipstick didn’t feel uncomfortable or drying to begin with. And when I sipped from a cup, they didn’t leave any telltale marks on the rim. I was really impressed with how well the lipstick had lasted for almost half the day.

It’s only when I ate lunch – a bowl of laksa – that I noticed it was fading in the centre. The colour was still visible around the outsides of my lips though, which I thought wasn’t too bad. Though the lipstick began to really fade towards the end of the day, there wasn’t any of the peeling or flaking you get with some matte liquid lipsticks. It was a clean fade, with just a light ring of colour left around my lips. See it for yourself in the video below:

The verdict
While I really liked the colour, there are other locally available matte liquid lipsticks that have the same long-wearing finish. So I would say save yourself the shipping fee (and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time). But to be fair, greasy food – like pizza or char kway teow – will break down even the most long-lasting lipsticks, so if I hadn’t had that bowl of laksa for lunch, it might have lasted much longer.
