While face peels sound intimidating, they actually pack a whole lot of benefits, including brightening your complexion and improving skin texture for radiant, clear skin. Consisting mainly of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), these chemical exfoliators, also known as face peels, help slough off dead skin to combat pigmentation, blemishes and roughness without being overly harsh.

AHAs are water soluble compounds that dissolve the “glue” that holds dead skin cells on the surface of our skin, sweeping them away to reveal clear, softer skin beneath. As a result, skin looks brighter, feels smoother and products also penetrate better. Common AHAs found in skincare are glycolic acid, lactic acid and mandelic acid.

BHAs, on the other hand, are oil soluble compounds, so they are able to penetrate the sebum that clogs pores. Since they also have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, they are usually found in products that are best suited for oily and blemish-prone skin. The most popular BHA found in skincare products is salicylic acid.

Both AHAs and BHAs increase sensitivity to the sun, so it’s usually advised to be generous with sunscreens when using products with these ingredients. Here are a some peels that will help reveal clear, glowing skin, all from the comfort of your home.
