When you live in a country like Singapore where it’s almost always sunny, including sunscreen in your beauty routine is non-negotiable. It’s your first line of defence against pigmentation, dark spots, and dull and dehydrated skin. But finding the right sunscreen can be challenging. You want one that offers optimum sun protection while being lightweight and non-sticky. And you don’t want one that leaves a white cast, because who does? And in an ideal world, a sunscreen could double as a great makeup base.
Are you asking for too much, though? Definitely not, because we found one that promises to fulfil all your needs: the Sunplay Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++. The sunscreen may be a new player in Singapore, but it reportedly has been selling out in Japan almost every month since its launch in March 2018.
The Best of Both Worlds
Can we just talk about how cute and mermaid-like the packaging is? But the packaging isn’t just pretty. The blue and pink hues represent the combination of blue and pink tints in the formula—and hence the resulting lavender tone—that help to enhance the appearance of clear skin and a healthy radiance, respectively.
The lavender tone is also said to help correct undertones. It sounds great in theory, but I was a bit wary of how it would work on my medium skin tone. I was afraid the purple tint might go ashy on my skin tone. Thankfully, that didn’t happen, though you can see a difference on the side where I applied the sunscreen versus where I didn’t.
However, the sunscreen also looks good on lighter skin tones. Not only does it help even out the skin tone and make it look one tone brighter (hence the name “Tone Up”), it also helps conceal minor imperfections, thanks to the iridescent particles that give a soft focus effect. This is perfect for lazy days when you want to skip the makeup but still look flawless.
What I really liked about the Sunplay Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence SPF 50+ PA++++ was that it’s extremely lightweight and went on smoothly. It also has a non-tacky finish and is not oily or greasy like some sunscreens. I always wear sunscreen under my foundation, and found that this one actually helped my makeup stay on longer.
Another great thing about this sunscreen is that it also nourishes the skin with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and a Pure Nuance Complex. Hyaluronic acid is very hydrating, so my skin didn’t feel dry like it does with some sunscreens; while the Pure Nuance Complex (a blend of hydrolysed prune extract, passion flower fruit extract and rosa roxburghii fruit extract) work together to brighten, soothe, even out skin tone and reduce damage from UV rays.
It’s also available in a spray format, which is great for the body or when you need to reapply sunscreen on-the-go.
