If you’ve spotted a Park Min Young look alike in Singapore, it might have been the What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? actress herself. After all, her sister lives on our sunny island, so the actress have come to visit a few times.
“My sister lives in Singapore, so I’ll visit her tonight or tomorrow,” says Min Young in English. In town for her first official appearance at the Viu x Samsung Galaxy Exclusive Fan Party at the Flower Dome on Friday, she spoke in a smattering of English, later mostly in Korean. Looks like her secretary character’s multilingual abilities have rubbed off her!

On her favourite scene in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim
“At the end of episode five, Mi So fails in her first kiss. Because Young Joon could not get the kiss done. She was waiting for the kiss, the chair spun around till it hit the wall. Mi Soo had to make many interesting expressions for the scene, I really enjoyed it.”
On what her likes and dislikes for Singapore food
“My favourite food is chilli crab. I ate a lot of it. I love it. I tried durian once. I don’t like it, because of the smell.”
On how she identifies with Kim Mi So, her character in What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim
“She is a professional working woman. The drama shows professional working woman’s life.
She has to keep really calm , and she can’t show much expression. That really resonates with me. She also thinks about what makes her happy if she is doing something else. I sometimes think about that too.”
On her personal style
“I’m a very casual person, but when I’m overseas, I try to put on an outfit that [suits] the country. In Singapore, it’s very hot, so I wear something more lightweight, airy. When I was in Paris, I wore a really big hat.”
On her secret to glowing skin
“Because of my job as an actress, I have to put on makeup for a long period. When I’m filming a drama, I have to put on makeup for 20 to 24 hours. My face gets dry and bad really fast. So every time I have a break – even a short break – I would take off my makeup. When I have food break, I take it off. I also put on two to three masks a day.”
On whether she can live without her mobile phone
“Whenever my phone is not next to me, I feel nervous. A lot of people are like me. I will try practising [to live without my phone] by turn off the mobile phone for a day.”
On her dreams in 10 years’ time
“I will still be acting in next 10 years. When I first started out, I never imagined I’d be acting for that long. Even when I get married and have kids, I will still continue to act.”
On working in China
“I really enjoyed my time in China. I went out with my co-stars to play and sing KTV. If you’re talking about the challenges, it would be that the weather was really hot in Hengdian. Language barrier also caused some problems. But the fun makes it all worth it.”
On the challenges she faced while playing a secretary
“I had to master the jargon used by secretaries. Also, a secretary’s posture is really straight. I have to master standing really straight.”
On whether she monitors herself on social media
“I have Weibo and Instagram. I personally manage them. I look at my social media accounts a lot. I search my name a lot because I take a lot of selfies with people when I travel. So I want to see how the photos turn out.”
On what she does to prepare for a drama.
“It really depends on the project. For What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, I had to lose weight, so I went on a diet. Before [acting in] for a drama, I will think about the character’s history, life, job function.
On filming her first rom-com, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim
“I’m not sure if it’s because it’s my first rom-com or because of this particular drama… On the film set it was really fun, everyone was really nice. Rather than thinking about the character, I would think of how to make the scene more fun, funnier.”
On whether she prefers rom-com to more serious roles
“I want to do rom-com. I want to play a female character who is really funny. As an actress, I don’t want to constrain myself. I’m open to all kinds of roles.”
On how to take good photos
“My secret is to take a lot of picture and choose the best out of the lot.”
On her pet dog Leon
“It’s really fat. It eats well, it sleeps well, it poops well. He is really bright, every time I take photo, it looks good.”
On her travels
“I’ve been to Singapore a few times before, I’m familiar with this place. I go travelling every time I finish a drama. I will take lots of photos, make it into an album, it becomes a memory for me after the trip.”
