When Jessica Chastain posted a photo of her eating the king of fruits, durian, on her Instagram page when she was in Singapore, the first question that every Singaporean asked was, “She can eat meh?”
Yes, she can, quite enjoyably so. She even brought the fruit to Hollywood for Jimmy Kimmel as a “gift” after her press tour for The Huntsman: Winter’s War.
When she started passing Jimmy gloves and knives, he looked at her skeptically (we don’t blame him). She then brought out the fruit and said, “That is durian. It is the king of fruits in Asia.”
When asked if it was disgusting, she nonchalantly answered, “They call it the blue cheese of fruit.”
She proceeded to proclaim her love for it and said, “It kind of tastes like onion, garlic, avocado and pineapple in a custard.” We’ve been eating durian for more than 20 years, but we didn’t think to describe it as such.

And as durian veterans (if we may call ourselves that), here are three things we noticed they did wrong when eating the fruit.
Jimmy sliced the fruit in half
That’s not how you open a durian, buddy. You’re supposed to make an X-shaped incision at the base, cut it halfway only on the sides, then pry it open. In that way, you don’t end up cutting the seeds like he did.
Removing the seed
Durian tastes better when you nibble the flesh off the seed. But maybe this wasn’t his fault. After all, Jessica deseeded the fruit for him and shoved it into his mouth.
Eating a whole chunk in one go
Come on, even veterans like us feel nauseous when we put too much in our mouth. It’s like having ammonia in your mouth. OK, maybe that’s not a good comparison, but you get what we mean. Which is why we think Jimmy wasn’t joking when he said, “I feel like throwing up a little bit right now.” We feel you, bro.
