Celebrity couples come and go, but news of a new celebrity couple never fail to make us excited. But what always surprises us is engagement news, especially those we don’t expect. If the couple has been dating for a while, we wouldn’t be surprised if wedding bells started ringing. But those who have only been dating for a month like Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson? Now, that makes us jump out of our seat. Then there are those who have been dating for some time but kept it under wraps until they decide to get married. (We don’t deserve to know, but we do want to know. -insert saddest-looking emoji ever-) Here are some of the most surprising celebrity engagements that have, uhh, taken us by surprise.
Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin
Many fans thought the Biebs would eventually end up with Selena Gomez, but he dropped a bomb on everyone by announcing his engagement to model Hailey Baldwin. In fact, word about the proposal got out before he even got to confirm their relationship! Their Instagram posts about each other shows how much they are so in love with each other.

In 2017, local actor Xu Bin announced on his Instagram page that he would be tying the knot the following month. He revealed that he and his then-fiancée had been dating for some time, but he kept the relationship under wraps because of his agency’s no-dating policy. The couple just welcomed a son yesterday.
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson
The singer took everyone by surprise when she reportedly got engaged to comedian Pete Davidson late last month. Some felt they got engaged way too soon. After all, they only started seeing each other recently, and it was right after she ended her two-year relationship with Mac Miller. The couple’s idea of dates? Getting new tattoos. Ariana has reportedly gotten five tattoos since she and Pete got together!

In 2012, at the peak of Wonder Girls’ popularity, leader Sunye announced that she would be getting married. She previously revealed on Strong Heart that she was dating a non-celebrity whom she met while doing charity work. The couple got married the following year while Sunye took an indefinite leave from the girl group before bowing out.

Park Yoo Chun
In April 2017, Yoo Chun announced that he would be getting married to Hwang Ha Na, who is dubbed as “Korea’s Paris Hilton”. The singer also revealed that he would retire after marriage. However, it seems like the marriage is not happening because the couple has reportedly broken up. While Ha Na initially said that the articles of their breakup were full of lies, she later reportedly updated her Instagram bio to acknowledge that she and Yoo Chun had broken up.

Super Junior’s Sungmin and Kim Sa Eun
When the Super Junior member suddenly announced in 2014 that he was getting married to musical actress Kim Sa Eun, fans got angry. But it wasn’t because their oppa would belong to someone else. There were several reasons for their anger. One of the reasons was because the announcement was made just as Super Junior released their new album, and promotion plans were derailed because of the backlash. After getting married, Sungmin enlisted in the army. But of course, it wasn’t something fans would simply forget. When it was announced that Sungmin would be joining Super Junior for their comeback last year, the backlash was so great that he had to pull out before promotions even started.

Shinhwa’s Eric and Na Hye Mi
The Shinhwa leader announced in April last year that he would be getting married in July that same year to actress Na Hye Mi. Just a few months earlier, his agency had confirmed that the pair was indeed dating. While their engagement came as a surprise, they had, in fact, been dating for five years! Eric wrote on his fan café, stating that he denied the dating rumour in 2014 because they had broken up at that time. “We broke up and got back together a lot,” he admitted.

Keiko Kitagawa and DAIGO
Instead of announcing their engagement, Japanese actress Keiko and singer-actor DAIGO held a joint press conference in 2016 to announce that they had gotten married. The couple had been dating for about two years after meeting each other on the set of a drama that Keiko had a lead role in. The singer had apparently wrote a proposal song for her titled “K S K (Kekkon Shite Kudasai)”, which translates into “Please Marry Me”. Nawww…

Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo had deflected rumours of them being in a relationship for the longest time, before they made an announcement that shook the whole K-entertainment scene: they would be getting married. Fans reacted positively to the announcement, especially because many of them had been rooting for the Descendants of the Sun couple to get together in real life.
