When NCT’s LUCAS, who was in Singapore for the MOSCHINO [tv] H&M preview party, walked into the room, we were bowled over by his modelesque height and good looks. But what impressed us most was his humility during the interview. At the end of the interview, he thanked the Singapore media present and admitted he was nervous because it was his first time doing an interview alone. It did take us by surprise, though, because although he only debuted in the K-pop group earlier this year, he’s already appeared in quite a few Korean variety shows—a feat some celebs have to wait a few years for to accomplish. And perhaps, this is thanks to his no-holds-barred personality and confidence, which makes him a joy to watch on variety shows. In fact, he seems to think the same, saying, “…all the members of NCT have their own unique individual charm. In this group, my character is more cheerful and outgoing, and I like to joke around so maybe that’s what sets me apart.”
His unique personality also shines through when he talks about his appearance. Time and again, the 19-year-old has acknowledged his looks—“I’m good-looking,” he said a few times during the interview—and this is not common among most K-pop stars. In fact, if we were to draw a comparison, one person who shares a similar personality and sense of humour is Super Junior’s Kim Hee Chul, who is also under the same company as LUCAS, SM Entertainment. But when asked to name his idol, LUCAS, who is born to a Thai mother and Chinese father, picked EXO’s Kai. He said, “When I was a trainee, I learned how to dance by watching his videos. I thought it was amazing how he always seems to transform into a different person whenever he’s on stage. I want to be like him and showcase my ability on stage.”
When a journalist in the group jokingly if he thinks Kai is better-looking than himself, LUCAS admitted Kai was more handsome and “very charming”. After being assured by the journalist that they were both good-looking, he said, “We are handsome in our own way.”
His quirky personality also showed when he described his first impression of Singapore. He said, “I was on the plane and it was as if I saw an illusion. At first, it was bright then the lights went out and I was like, ‘What happened?’ and then it suddenly turned bright again. I thought to myself this is such a beautiful city.”
When asked to elaborate on his experience, his explanation still left us baffled: “I don’t know if the plane’s cabin had a problem because during the flight, the lights were on but suddenly they were turned off. I thought I was still sleeping and wondered what was going on, then the lights slowly came back on. I don’t know if the lights were supposed to go off at that place. I really don’t know, it’s a little weird. Or maybe I saw a UFO.”
