K-pop boy band Wanna One returned to Singapore last night. While they only had a fan meeting last year, this time round, they performed to a packed arena at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for their first concert, Wanna One: The World. The 11-member group, comprising Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Lee Daehwi, Kim Jaehwan, Ong Seongwu, Park Woojin, Lai Kuanlin, Yoon Jisung, Hwang Minhyun, Bae Jinyoung and Ha Sungwoon, impressed with their vocals and dance abilities. Scroll through the gallery to read the highlights.
When they started their concert with a bang
The 11-member group started their concert on a high note with “Burn It Up”. But what’s worth mentioning was the allusion to the song title and lyrics, as they opened and punctuated the performance with bursts of fireworks.
Their unit performances
One advantage of having a group with a lot of members is that you can split into sub-units and have some members perform while others take a breather or get ready backstage. And Wanna One used this to their advantage (and we bet fans are grateful) as they performed as their sub-units during some segments of the show: Lean On Me impressed with their amazing vocals; Number 1 showed off their rap, vocals and sexy dance moves; The Heal saw Daehwi tinkling the ivories as Seongwoo performed a modern dance, while Triple Position saw Kang Daniel, Jaehwan and Woojin teaming up for “Kangaroo”.
Their earnestness to speak English
The members impressed Singapore Wannables with their English efforts: Dae Hwi spoke the language effortlessly (though it shouldn’t come as a surprise since he spent six years in California), while the other members tried to pepper their interactions with simple English. At one point, they even tried to act out the reactions to drinking cold water, by saying “So shiok!” Kang Daniel then suggested some members express their happiness from eating chilli crab by saying “Damn nice!” Sungwoon gets our vote for being the most extra and adorable.
Their outstanding stage presence
There’s a reason why these 11 guys won Produce 101 Season 2 – they’ve got the skills and stage presence to make up for the lack of experience. What’s most impressive was Jaehwan’s powerhouse vocals on “I’ll Remember” – sans musical accompaniment. Although the mic wasn’t working initially – a testament that he was singing live – the singer trudged on like a pro to impress the audience with his vocal acrobats. What followed was equally beautiful: the other members joined him to serenade fans as the arena was imbued in pink and purple strobe lights. What a sight!
Right before they started “Always”, Daehwi asked fans if they knew how to sing along to the song. The fans surprised Wanna One by singing the Korean lyrics to the chorus effortlessly as the members turned their mics to the crowd. Daehwi later said, “I love the vibes in here. [Your singing] was so beautiful. I’m so touched by your singing vibes.”
Their fan service
Like most boy bands, Wanna One was generous when it came to fan service. They didn’t scrimp on sending smiles and waves their fans’ way. Jihoon, who is known for doling out next-level fan service, made heart signs for his adoring fans. While acting out his reaction to drinking cold water, he decided to do two versions of “So shiok”: a sexy version, and a cute one. Can we also talk about Kang Daniel showing off his abs during his dance solo?
