It’s finally Friyay! Goodbye early mornings and hello late night outings. But sometimes, you get too carried away with the celebrations, and while living in the moment seems like the best thing ever, the post-drinking syndromes aren’t. Here are five filling meals that will bring you out of the horrors of a hangover.
Every mom’s go-to for the sick and weak that should be ours too. This soupy solid dish is easy to swallow and digest while rehydrating and filling your growling tummy. Other than that, the carbohydrates also give your body the energy to clean out the toxins from the alcohol.
Bananas have everything your body needs to combat the torment of over-drinking. They are made up of 75% water and full of potassium, which are both often lost with the consumption of alcohol. They are also natural sources of Vitamins such as B6, which is shown to reduce hangover symptoms by as much as 50 per cent in the Annals of Nutrition. Pair it with oats that will neutralise the acids and raise your blood sugar levels, giving you an extra energy boost.
Dehydration is one of the main causes for making you feel like crap after a night out drinking, and a soupy dish will definitely do the trick. The beef-stewed broth contains ginger, which is known to ease nausea by aiding with the digestion of alcohol and the salt from the meat helps retain water. The carbs from the rice noodles will give you energy and nutrients lost from drinking.
A staple in many hangover concoctions, eggs provide energy and contain amino acids such as cysteine and taurine. Cysteine breaks down acetaldehyde, the by product of the digestion of ethanol, which is also the culprit of your booze blues, while taurine defends the liver from free radicals and toxins, preventing liver disease. Eggs are also rich in protein and serotonin, which helps lift your mood.
Not only is this one of our favourite comfort foods, it is super convenient to prepare and readily available in convenience stores if it isn’t already in your late-night snack stash. It is spicy, filling, jump starts your metabolism and get you to sweat out the toxins. Manuela Neuman, an assistant professor of pharmacology at the University of Toronto, said, “The sudden introduction of spicy foods basically distracts your body from focusing on your hangover.” Well, that is if your spice tolerance is as high as you were the previous night.
