Get ready to sink your teeth into sinfully good burgers this December at Five Guys! The American burger chain finally hits our shores, setting up shop at level one of Plaza Singapura.
Established in Arlington, Virginia in 1986 by the Murrells, Five Guys was named after the five brothers in the family, and has since expanded to over 1,600 outlets across the globe with its winning recipe for hamburgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fries and milkshakes.
There’s something to be said about a fast food chain that prides itself on not using frozen ingredients or relying on microwaves and cooking timers, and preparing food from scratch daily to ensure freshness. This might be why Five Guys does slightly more damage to the wallet than the other popular burger franchises like Shake Shack.
With a focus on beef burgers, Five Guys uses 100 percent fresh ground beef in their patty, no preservatives added. With four types of burgers, hotdogs and sandwiches on the menu, you feel like you’re spoiled for choice, especially with the 15 free toppings (including grilled mushrooms, relish, and sauces like Hot Sauce and Bar-B-Q) plus the cheese and/or bacon you can add to your burger or hot dog.
Burgers range from the basic Hamburger ($13) to the decadent Bacon Cheeseburger ($17), which includes two strips of crispy applewood smoked bacon. The Bacon Cheeseburger that we tried is a staggering behemoth stacked with a thick and juicy beef patty, melted American cheese, smoked bacon strips, onions, tomatoes, pickles, lettuce and mayonnaise. The one-in-one taste in the mouth made every single bite satisfying.
For those don’t-feel-like-a-burger days, we recommend the Cheese Dog ($12), which is easy to wolf down. Otherwise, sandwich options are available too—Grilled Cheese ($8), BLT ($11), and Veggie Sandwich ($8), which you can have with or without the bun. Speaking of buns, theirs are baked with a secret recipe in fresh batches daily and kept warm on a dedicated grill!
And what’s a burger joint without some fries? The ones at Five Guys are hand-cut daily, fried in peanut oil and undergo the “mush test” to ensure they are always crisp on the outside, creamy and mashed on the inside. We tried the traditional Five Guys Style ($9 for a Regular) with a spicy Cajun dip on the side, and kept going back for more!
Finally, wash it all down with a tall cup of customisable Five Guys Shake ($10), which comes with a creamy, vanilla milkshake base and your choice of one or more of the eleven mix-ins such as fresh strawberries, bananas, peanut butter, salted caramel and even crispy bacon and fresh cold-brewed coffee! We had a shake with peanut butter and strawberries, and it was the perfect balance of sweet and savoury.
