His thoughts on Singapore fans
Performing for the first time in Singapore, Shawn shared that he was overwhelmed by the support he had received since arriving here. He gushed to the cheers of the fans, “When I stepped out at the airport [here] in Singapore, I thought, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people gathered at an airport before.’”
The special additions to his setlist
Showing off his vocals and versatility, Shawn performed his handwritten medley consisting of songs such as “Kids in Love” and the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”. He also delivered covers of crowd-pleasers like Plain White Ts’ “Hey There Delilah” and Kings Of Leon’s “Use Somebody” in between his set.
His incredible guitar solos
Not only does Shawn have matured vocals that sound even better than on his album, but his guitar-playing skills are also truly impressive. Playing through nearly the entire show, Shawn highlighted his abilities during “Bad Reputation”, where he jammed with his guitarist, with the strobe light effects making for a heart-racing experience.
When he showered fans with love
What’s a Shawn Mendes concert without a little fan service? Shawn took the time to hold hands with some lucky fans and even knelt down to stare into a fan’s eyes while singing “Stitches”. The heartthrob also showed appreciation to his supporters when he came off the stage during”‘Ruin”, giving some fans high-fives and handing guitar picks to others.
When he showed his fanboy side
Playing the chords of “Life Of The Party” on the piano, Shawn paid tribute to his musical inspiration, Ed Sheeran, with a few lines from “Castle On The Hill”. This isn’t the first time he’s shown the Englishman some extra love: Earlier in the year, he drove fans wild when he had the British singer pop onstage to perform a duet of “Mercy” in Brooklyn. The surprise appearance also marked four years since he expressed his wish to one day perform with Ed onstage on Twitter.
When he shared his thoughts on his new track - "Understand"
Shawn’s voice thickened with emotion as he told the crowd about “Understand”, a song off his Illuminate album: “This is a song that I think, until the day that I’m really really old and I’m listening back to all my music, I’ll listen back to this one in particular and say, ‘I remember that feeling.’” He also shared that he feels the song is really special to him, and he thinks “this is something a lot of people can connect with”.
Before playing love song “Don’t Be A Fool”, Shawn told the audience with glee, “I was at the fan meet today and a fan – I think his name was Nicholas – told me that tonight at the show he’s gonna tell a girl that he likes [that he likes her]… I hope that goes down well.” He shot the audience a knowing smirk before adding, “And for anyone else who’s in the position – if you’ve decided to bring a date to the show – this would be a really good song to make a move.”
