It’s no secret that young Singaporeans love going on staycations. And if you’re looking for a place that offers something more than just a room and a comfy bed, you should consider checking in at Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong, which won the title of Best Boutique Hotel in the CLEO Staycation Awards 2018. Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong draws inspiration from its location, and the hotel decor is a huge nod to the Peranakan heritage of the Katong neighbourhood. The check-in process was pleasant: I waited in the lobby (which looked more like a living room), sipping on my welcome drink—a cup of coffee brewed with local roaster Common Man coffee beans. While waiting, I browsed through the pop-up provision shop in the lobby, which carries goods from local artisans as well as a selection of old-school snacks.
The look and feel of the room also stayed true to the Peranakan theme. I checked into the Premier room with bathtub, which costs $252++ per night. Highlights include the bathroom, which has a custom-made dragon motif bathtub right by the floor-to-ceiling window, and the vanity counter that rests on Singer sewing machine legs (which I recognised because my grandmother had one).
Another local touch that I really adored was the minibar, which is built into a traditional lacquered wood display cabinet. Besides the rooster motif dinnerware that anyone who grew up in a Chinese household would be familiar with, it also contained complimentary old-school sweets. Needless to say, I almost depleted the entire stash of White Rabbit candies.
Buffet breakfast is hosted at Baba Chews Bar And Eatery, located in the old Joo Chiat Police Station within the Hotel Indigo property. Besides a small spread of the usual pastries, cheese and cold cuts, some breakfast items are made to order, and the menu contains a good mix of Western and local breakfast dishes.
While you’re there, don’t forget to take a dip at the rooftop infinity pool that offers a skyline view of the Katong neighbourhood. A yoga class is also held on the rooftop every Sunday at 8.30am. Each session costs $20 for hotel guests and $30 for members of the public, and is inclusive of refreshments, pool access for the day, and 15 percent off dining at Baba Chews Bar And Eatery on the day of class.
