J-pop Singer Ayumi Hamasaki Is Going Deaf

Veteran J-pop singer Ayumi Hamasaki just dropped a bombshell on her fans she’s going completely deaf. The singer communicated this piece of bad news to her fans on her blog, Team Ayu, last Saturday.

The 38-year-old singer has been completely deaf in her left ear since 2008. It first started when she caught a cold and an ear infection in 2000 in the middle of a concert tour. Doctors had advised her to take a break and refrain from exposing herself to loud noises, but Ayumi pressed on with her schedule after a short hospital stay, which lasted only a few days. She did not cancel or postpone any performances until much later, which contributed to the loss of hearing in her left ear.

Now, she’s told that her right ear is weakening as well from overworking to compensate for her left ear.

“I was experiencing crippling dizziness. I was unable to walk in a straight line, and was often vomiting in the restroom while at the rehearsal studio,” she wrote.

She admitted to feeling lost after receiving that piece of devastating news, but assured fans that she will still be performing.

“The stage is where I belong. It’s the only place I really, truly exist. I don’t know anything else.”
