If you’re more active on Instagram stories than you are on your main feed, don’t worry, you’re not alone. The great thing about IG stories is that you can post almost as many as you like and no one would think you’re spamming. After all, people are now spending more than half of their time on Instagram watching Stories. But that also means you’re “competing” with a lot of other people.
Since they only last for 24 hours, you’d definitely want to upload something that is eye-catching. If you don’t have the time or skill to create and design outside of the app, fret not! Here are seven hacks to make your Instagram Stories stand out from the crowd.
1. Create a solid background
Raise your hands if you’re just discovering that you can create solid backgrounds on Instagram, without Googling for a solid plain or coloured background and saving it to your camera roll.
You’ll first need to take a picture of something—since you’re going to be covering it up, it doesn’t matter what you snap. Click on the pen icon on the top right, choose the marker or neon brush, then choose a colour of your liking. Tap and hold the screen for a few seconds and your screen will be entirely filled with the colour of your choice. Easy peasy!
2. Create geometric patterns for extra intrigue
Want to add designs to your Story without using Photoshop or Canva? Punctuation marks will do the trick—you can play around with them to create geometric elements. Different type tool fonts have different looks for their marks, so feel free to resize and play around with them. We recommend placing the marks around text elements or at the borders for emphasis or for simply aesthetic purposes.
3. Play around with kerning
Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between letters in a word, which is also another hack you can tap on to add extra emphasis to certain words and phrases. Play around with the spacing—you’ll realise that your text looks so much cooler than just typing it out normally. Normal spacing? Never heard of it.
4. Use your picture’s colour palette for fun letter background
Another cool hack is creating coloured backgrounds for each letter of your text based on the colour palette of your picture. After clicking the text icon in the top right corner, type the first letter of the word, choose the font colour and then add a background with a colour from the colour palette of your picture.
Btw, you’re not just limited to the colours at the bottom of your screen. Press and hold any of the circular colours, and a whole spectrum of shades will be revealed to you. Simply drag left or right and release to pick your colour. Once you’ve selected the background colour for the first letter, move on to the next and play around with the colours and positioning of your letters! It might be a little time-consuming, but it creates a holistic look and feel for your content.
5. Add a translucent layer
Here’s a hack to tease your followers without revealing the full image. Instead of adding a solid colour that you’ve learnt earlier on, add a translucent layer by choosing the second pen tool. Next, select the colour of your choice and hold until a translucent layer appears on your screen.
To go the extra mile, click on the Eraser tool for the colour block effect – you can also do this with a solid background! With your finger, erase the portion of the layer of the colour block that you want to reveal. And voila! A fun and enticing way to make your stories stand out, no doubt.
6. Write in rainbow/ombre text
If you’re feeling a little creative or playful, this will be your favourite Instagram Story hack. Gone are the days of basic, single-coloured text. Now, every letter can display a different shade. After typing in your text, highlight the entire text. Then press and hold until the extended colour palette pops up. Simultaneously, unselect one letter of your text and move your finger to a new colour. Repeat this step until all letters have a different colour.
Mastering the rainbow/ombre text effect requires some finger gymnastics, but once you get the hang of it, you might find yourself always writing in rainbow text because it can be really, really addictive.
7. Tag your location to get more views
Want more views or followers? Tagging a location in your Stories will allow your content to show up in that location’s Story feed, which is a collection of the top stories with a specific location. This will definitely help you to get more exposure and rack up a bunch of views within a short amount of time!
