This July, K-pop girl group TWICE, who has been taking over the world by storm, will be making a stop in Singapore for their third tour, TWICELIGHTS. Fans who “Fancy” them definitely have to get their hands on the tickets and get ready to “Dance the Night Away” with Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. Whether you’re a new ONCE (TWICE’s fanclub name) or have been supporting them since their “Like Ooh-Ahh” days, scroll through this gallery to find out 10 interesting facts about these K-pop sweethearts.
1. TWICE was formed on a survival show called Sixteen
TWICE was actually formed through a survival show, Sixteen, in which 16 trainees from JYP Entertainment competed to debut as part of a girl group. There were a few other memorable contestants of the programme that didn’t make the final cut but are currently also successful in their right, such as Chaeyeon of IZ*ONE and her younger sister Chaeryeong who recently made her debut in Itzy, a girl group which is also under JYP Entertainment. Another contestant that almost made the line-up is the winner of Produce 101’s first season, Jeon Somi, who just made her much-awaited solo debut under YG Entertainment’s The Black Label!
2. TWICE has nine members, of which three are Japanese and one is Taiwanese
This might already be pretty well known fact, but not all the members of TWICE are Korean: Mina, Momo and Sana are Japanese while Tzuyu is Taiwanese. However, the foreign members are fluent in the Korean language, having put in the hard work to pick it up over the years. Now, it is almost impossible to tell who are the foreign members without prior knowledge!
3. The shortest member of TWICE is the second youngest, while the tallest member is the youngest!
The second youngest member of TWICE, Chaeyoung is actually the shortest member, coming in at just 158.9cm. Chaeyoung often talks about wanting to be taller and on their show, TWICE Private Live, she had her height measured and revealed that she was had hit 159cm, before exclaiming that she might hit 160cm soon! The youngest member, or the maknae, Tzuyu, who stands at whooping 172cm tall, making her the tallest among the nonet. It is extremely adorable that the two youngest member have such a huge height difference between the two of them.
4. TWICE’s Dahyun was in a viral video predebut
This might be a fact not known by everyone but Dahyun was in a viral video prior to her debut. When she was in sixth grade, she was filmed in church doing her iconic ‘eagle dance’, which was a dance where she flapped her arms in a hectic manner to resemble that of an eagle. When the video was uploaded onto YouTube, it blew up and gained thousands of views. Fast-forward years later, on the programme Sixteen, Dahyun actually incorporated her iconic ‘eagle dance’ into the performance she showcased for JYP. It is so lovely to see that Dahyun is still the same down-to-earth girl with an amazing sense of humour after all those years!
5. Jihyo trained for 10 years before she finally made her debut
While it is usually common for trainees to undergo years of training before their debut, it is rare for a trainee’s training period to exceed seven years. Jihyo was one of the few trainees that had an exceptionally long training period of 10 years! In fact, she actually entered JYP Entertainment on the exact same day as Sunmi from Wonder Girls, and trained alongside her seniors from the same company, such as Taecyeon from 2PM and Suzy.
6. Tzuyu inspired a video game to be made
In 2017, Tzuyu had to learn how to skateboard for a commercial that she was in and this actually inspired fans to create a mobile phone game about her. The game is called “Tzuyu Skate TWICE” and can be found on the Google Play Store! In this cute game, fans can control a character that looks just like a mini Tzuyu on a skateboard and try to get the character to the end of the obstacle course of each level.
7. TWICE members have appeared in other music videos before!
Before debut, a few of the TWICE members had appeared in other artists’ music videos. Sana was in label mate GOT7’s “A” music video in which she played a waitress who served the boys at a restaurant. Dahyun played the love interest of JB in GOT7’s “Stop Stop It”, which also featured Chaeyoung and Momo. Last year, Momo also made an appearance Kim Heechul and Min Kyung Hoon’s music video for “Sweet Dream”, playing the role of high school girl with a one-sided crush on Kyung Hoon.
8. Momo was not originally in the final line-up but was then added in by JYP himself
The lineup for TWICE was originally only supposed to have eight girls but the CEO of JYP Entertainment, Park Jinyoung, personally requested for Momo to be added into the group despite her prior elimination on the show. JYP mentioned that he couldn’t bear to see someone with Momo’s dance talent go to waste, so he knew he had to let her debut so that her talents can be seen by the world. We cannot imagine a version of TWICE without their dancing queen Momo.
9. The reason behind TWICE’s name
Park Jin Young explained that the reason why he chose the name TWICE was because he wanted the girls to touch people’s hearts twice—once through the ears, and once through the eyes. This is extremely applicable since the girls not only have melodic sweet voices but are each “visuals” in their own rights! Their name definitely fits them well!
10. The reason for their fandom name, ONCE!
It is extremely fitting that the fandom name of TWICE is called ONCE, but there is actually a reason behind why their fandom got that name. The TWICE members themselves have spoken about it and said that “If you love us even ‘once’, we’ll repay you with TWICE our love”. Nawww, how sweet!
