Back To The Future’s Auto-lacing Shoes Are Officially A Reality, And It’s Insane

If you weren’t aware, yesterday, 21/10/2015 was officially Back to the Future Day. And while everyone was caught up in reminiscing about the iconic family films, one company, at least had its eye firmly on the future.

Nike (@Nike) sent out a cryptic tweet tagging the movie’s star, Michael J. Fox, saying, “see you tomorrow”, sending the Internet into a speculative frenzy. The reason? It all has to do with this scene:

The light-up, auto-lacing sneakers Nike designed specifically for Back To The Future II have long been revered as a cult object. Dubbed the Nike Mag, a limited quantity of 1,500 shoes were produced and auctioned in 2011, with a total of $4.7 million raised for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s disease research. The shoes were exact replicas of those worn by Marty McFly, down to the light-up heels, but the catch was – the signature “Power laces” didn’t exist

YET. Today, history (the future?) repeats itself as Michael J. Fox once again dons the iconic shoes. (Watch it here.) Listen out for the telltale whirr of then electronic laces and prepare to restrain your excitement. Even better, the shoes (unlike 2011’s versions) look light enough to at least wear comfortably, if not run. Marty’s verdict? “That’s insane. That’s really great.” We couldn’t agree more.

How can you get your hands on a pair? The limited edition 2015 Nike Mags will be going on auction next year, with all proceeds going to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Details coming from @Nike early next year.
