The world might be talking about the Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, or the fact that Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan appeared in what’s said to be Kim Jong Un’s first selfie, but let’s not forget another leader whom the President of the United States is going to meet in November: President Halimah Yacob.
She’s made history as Singapore’s first female president and is known for her down-to-earth personality. This year will be the first Hari Raya she celebrates as the president, and to commemorate this occasion, she has invited underprivileged children and youth, and their caregivers, to The Istana for the Hari Raya open house on June 15.
We’re definitely touched by her efforts to reach out to the underprivileged – after all, Hari Raya is about helping the less fortunate – and we’re quite looking forward to her Hari Raya outfit. After all, she’s proven herself to be pretty bold when it comes to fashion, as evident from these tips that you can steal from her.
Pick a statement piece
Whether it’s an accessory or a top, pick a piece that will be the pièce de résistance of your outfit. In Madam Halimah’s case, her pearl necklace is her standout item for this dual-toned outfit. If pearls are not your thing, opt for a statement necklace or earrings instead.
Wear a pop of colour
Who says presidents have to stick to a boring colour palette? Madam President clashed a dark printed top with a bright blue headscarf when she met Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. And we can see why she did that because a pop of colour can instantly update an outfit!
Update your mono-toned outfits
Instead of wearing the same colour from head-to-toe, inject variation by wearing different shades from the same colour family. In Madam Halimah’s case, she chose to complement three shades of green. If you’re not as adventurous as she is when it comes to fashion choices, play with shades of brown or grey before making your foray into bright colours territory.
Keep up with trends
If crazy Instagram trends are not your thing, why not keep up with the colour trends? Grey is in for Spring Summer 2018, and Madam President seems to be in the know, as she donned this light grey outfit at the media wrap-up for her state visit to Brunei last month. Even if bright colours like scarlet and magnolia are not your thing, you can still opt for more muted trending colours like Madam Halimah did.
Dress for the occasion
Madam Halimah knows the importance of dressing for the occasion, which is why, you might have noticed that she picks a different fabric for formal political meetings as opposed to public appearances. When she met the prime minister of India, she wore a tailored brocade top in red. Learn from her by selecting more luxe materials for important events like a wedding.
Play with layers
Who says Singapore’s weather is too hot to layer your clothes? The key is selecting the right materials to wear. Our Prez chose to layer a shirt with a lightweight red top, not only to cover her neck (aurat), but also for a more corporate feel. Emulate this look by layering your sexy party top with a collared shirt!
Don’t be afraid to clash prints
Madam President’s brave choice of clashing her printed baju kurung with with leaf-printed tudung is laudable. And she pulled it off too! Take a leaf out of her book by clashing a bold print with a more subtle one.
