We love these local brands that are founded by women who pursued their passions and made their dreams a reality. Esse was born out of the desire to create clothing that’s more sustainable and made ethically. In the age of fast fashion and consumerism, it takes serious guts to launch a brand that focuses on basics and might have a higher price point. But it’s good that customers, both local and international, are making the shift to developing a hardworking capsule wardrobe. Kate Low started Perk By Kate due to the need to find better fitting bras for her petite size, and seven years later, she’s launched her own in-house brand of innerwear and recently unveiled a multi-label lingerie store. Young designer Silvia Teh‘s dream of having her own fashion label was propelled forward when she won the 2015 Harper’s BAZAAR Asia New Generation Fashion Designer Award and got to study fashion at the prestigious Instituto Marangoni in Milan.
When it comes to beauty, Rosanne Tang started her makeup school Bloom by Rosanne only to find that her students also needed a good brush set and set out to create makeup tools – BloomKIT – that help busy women achieve that flawless finish they’re always looking for. Xenia Wong founded Sigi Skin, a line of multi-tasking skincare to help busy women achieve their best skin – the first step to getting your makeup to look lovely. And Lynsey Lim started her line of natural, vegan and cruelty-free skincare Handmade Heroes when she found she couldn’t trust ingredients used in mass market beauty products.
