Hari Raya happens only once a year and if you’re like most millennials, you’ll probably only use your Hari Raya outfit once. But every woke millennial is now talking about reusing and cutting down on wastage, and there’s no reason why this shouldn’t extend to your sartorial choices, including “baju raya” or Hari Raya outfits.
Sure, you can wear that glitzy dress again for a friend’s wedding or when you attend your company’s annual dinner and dance, but what about that two-piece baju kurung? We asked fashion influencer Dalillah Ismail for tips on transforming your baju raya into everyday modest wear. Scroll through the gallery for inspo.
A quirky bag is a game-changer
“I love challenging myself to style festive pieces with my daily wardrobe essentials, or even the other way round—I call this mix of casual and formal pieces ‘up-styling’. One way I do that is by pairing a baju kurung with the unlikely white sneakers. Top it off with a quirky bag and you’re all set!”
Choose a piece that you would actually wear every day
“Being able to create multiple styles and looks with an outfit gives me a sense of satisfaction, especially when you are able to wear a piece over and over again on different occasions. I can totally wear this fringe skirt for Hari Raya, meetings with clients or brunch with the girlfriends.”
Don’t underestimate the power of socks
“I love throwing on a pair of funky socks into my style mix because it instantly adds personality and a quirky edge to my look. At the moment, I’m obsessed with polka dot and fishnet designs in candy colours. Who says you can’t wear these with modest way? It’s an easy way to put a modern spin to your outfit.”
Being extra is always acceptable
“I am never afraid to express myself through colours, textures and prints. A full sequined skirt? Why wouldn’t I wear that when Hari Raya is all about looking glam? After Raya, I would throw on a blazer and wear it to events or a meeting.”
Reuse your baju kurung top as a top on normal days
“Co-ords are all the rage now, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t match denim with denim. Think you can’t reuse your baju kurung top from Hari Raya? Match it with a denim suit and no one would be able to tell it actually came from a baju kurung set!”
