From her appointment as head of jewellery design at Dior Men to a sold-out capsule collection with Nike, AMBUSH co-founder Yoon Ahn is definitely no stranger to a collaboration or two. Known for her experimental designs that infuse pop culture, Yoon’s work has garnered herself many celebrity fans such as Kanye West and Lady Gaga.
But while her past collaborations might have required you to bust out some (or all) of your life’s savings, the creative director has now partnered with clothing giant UNIQLO for a capsule collection that’s equal parts cute and cool. Streetwear and Disney fans will want to get their hands on this collection, which features Minnie Mouse as you’ve never seen her before.
Hot of the heels of the release, we speak to Yoon on her journey to becoming a designer and the inspirations behind her collection with UNIQLO.

When did you first realise you wanted to be a designer? And could you share with us your journey towards envisioning that?
I wanted to do something with graphics and pictures when I was in middle school. It’s just been about discovering and figuring out one step at a time from there. For me, ‘design’ means something bigger than just coming up with a product.
You’re known for your edgy take on streetwear as as as your subversive jewellery designs. What made you decide to partner with UNIQLO especially on a character as iconic as Minnie Mouse?
As a devoted UNIQLO customer and a big fan of UNIQLO, it was a no-brainer for me. When UNIQLO approached us on a collab with Disney, I knew right away that an iconic character like Minnie would be another perfect representation of this project.
My goal was to capture the character of Minnie through a minimal and abstract way which has not been done before.
What were some of your inspirations when working on this collection? Do you have a favourite Disney movie or character?
Minnie, of course! Also a huge fan of Ariel from The Little Mermaid.
You wear many hats as a creative. From founding AMBUSH, heading jewellery design at DIOR Men and collaborating with brands such as Nike and UNIQLO. What is it like working across so many different platforms and how do the experiences and challenges differ from each other?
They are all a similar process. Working across different platforms further helps me to see things from a different perspective so I enjoy it a lot.
