Regardless of your body shape, finding a perfect wedding dress is tough work. After all, you need to consider so many things, from fabric to budget. While we have done a roundup of bridal boutiques that cater to plus-size women, how do you look for a dress that actually flatters your body in those boutiques?
Jo Cooke and Alison Law, who own a bridal boutique in the UK that caters to curvy women, Curves and Couture, dish out tips on looking for a dress that would flaunt and flatter your curves. FYI, the two women are also on TLC’s Curvy Brides Boutique, so you know they’re the real experts in this field.
Save yourself the frustrating experience and do your homework before you hit the stores. Find out what designers are out there, the styles on your hit and miss list, and which stores carry plus-size collection. Having this in mind before you start shopping would give you an idea of what to expect and what alternatives there are. You shouldn’t start off feeling discouraged!
A dress in the right fabric can smooth out flaws and flatter curves. Light fabrics such as silk and lace clings to the body whereas shinier fabrics like satin reflect the light and can magnify every detail. On the opposite side of the spectrum, taffeta and heavier silk are thicker materials that can create a streamline silhouette.
When life throws you curves, flaunt them! Focus on what you want to highlight rather than what you would rather hide. It’s your time to show them off! Always get compliments on your shoulders and cleavage? Choose a sexy backless halter grown and strut down that aisle.
Don’t shy away from ruching or ruffles. They can be very forgiving, regardless of shape and height, concealing flaws behind the details and drawing attention towards the waist – the narrowest part of the body. Asymmetrical ruching and ruffles can also help balance out any fullness, giving more support and structure.
Perfect fit inside and out
What goes underneath a wedding dress is almost as important as the dress itself. Shapewear is your friend to hide all the lumps and bumps, and the right lingerie is key to a seamless and smooth lines.
Take the time to find out what options work for you and your dress specifically. Don’t forget to do a “full-dress rehearsal” to avoid any disasters on your wedding day!
Beyond the shape and style, your wedding dress should reflect who you are. Curate a bridal squad of your closest BFFs who know you and are in a good position to help you pick something that best reflects your personality that is comfortable, flattering and is a perfect fit.
Celebrate curvy confidence
This is something that Curvy Brides would want you to remember. All brides deserve the fairy-tale experience and you are no exception. Pick a dress that makes you feel fabulous. It’s your big day – hold your head high and own the room!
