If your gut is unhealthy, you will most likely end up with a weaker immune system as around 60 to 70 percent of the immune cells that make up the immune system lives in the gut. One way to improve gut health is to take probiotics. They are commonly known as healthy bacteria and besides helping to strengthen your immune system, also have benefits such as improving your digestive system, mood and sleep.
Drinking probiotic drinks like kefir and kombucha are a great and easy way to incorporate probiotics in your diet. Though they may sound like trendy health drinks, these ingredients have existed for centuries. Kombucha is a fermented black tea and was first used in China in 221 BC. It is made by adding a SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast) into brewed green tea or black tea with sugar. It earned the name “tea of immortality” as it was believed to be able to treat all kinds of illness. After spreading to Russia, Japan and Eastern Europe, the Japanese gave it the name “kombucha” and in Europe, it was even called the “elixir of life”.
Kefir on the other hand is not tea-based and tastes more like a yoghurt drink instead. Fermented from kefir grains, it is a water or milk-based drink that does not contain caffeine and is a richer source of lactic acid bacteria.
