If someone had told me at the start of 2020 that I’d be working from home wearing a variety of lippies, I would have laughed in their face. But here we are. Working from home is the new normal for a lot of us. And wearing a mask every time we step out in public is mandatory for all of us. The focus has shifted from makeup to skincare even as we enjoy more freedom in Phase 2. Here’s a list of some of the lip products, and some skincare products that helped me get through the days this month.
If you’re looking for a lightweight serum that absorbs really quickly, will layer well under your other skincare products, and most importantly, help lighten marks from pimples, and pigmentation, this is the one for you. I’ve been using it as the first step of my skincare routine, and noticed the dark spots left behind after a pimple has healed seem to be fading quicker than usual. My skin also looks brighter in general. This is because the serum has potent skin brightening ingredients like Monkey Jack Heartwood Extract, Japanese spring turmeric leaf and oxyresveratrol that go deep within the skin to tackle hyperpigmentation at the root. It also has cherry blossom extracts that boosts collaged production to keep skin firm. The unique pump delivery system delivers just the right amount of serum you need for the whole face, but you can also use it only on spots that require special attention.
I have dry lips that are prone to flaking and cracking so one thing I always have on hand are lip balms. I recently added this one to my collection and I have to say I quite like it. For one, the colours are fairly pigmented, so if I want something that will nourish my lips and give me a wash of colour, I reach for the Dr. Belmeur Advanced Cica Touch Lip Balm. I say nourishing because the formula has five types of cica—asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassoside, madecassic acid and centella asiatica leaf extract—that immediately soothe and relieve dry lips. Plus, the moment the formula comes in contact with your lips, it turns into a serum, so it doesn’t feel heavy or sticky or glossy. Instead it leaves a hint of glow like I’ve seen on the lips of all the leading ladies in the K-dramas.
RiRi keeps launching beauty products and we keep lapping them up because they are just that good. Her newest launch is perfect for people who don’t like wearing saturated colours or prefer a bit of shine over matte textures. Available in 10 shades that range from clear, nude and MLBB to aubergine and coral red, the lipsticks are infused with pomegranate oil to lock in moisture and keep lips hydrated. They are perfect for days when you want your makeup to be low-key, or for use at home. I have one at my desk (I don’t wear lipsticks out any more, because face mask) and reapply it few times a day to ensure my lips are hydrated. I like that they give a bit of shine without being as sticky as a lip gloss. I also like to layer them over some of my matte lipsticks when I want a bit of shine.
Now that we’re in phase 2, I’m stepping out of the house a lot more than I used to, while still wearing a face mask. And because I am paranoid about the damage a mask can inflict on the skin, I always try to use calming and soothing skincare once I am home and have washed my face. This mask is one of those soothing ones that immediately calms my skin. It has a cica complex that comprises centella asiatica extract, centella asiatica leaf water and madecassoside that soothes dry and irritated skin and helps strengthen the skin barrier function. It instantly calms my skin, and feels even better when I’ve remembered to chill it first. Once the 20 minutes are up I massage any remaining essence into my skin. I usually use it before bed and my skin looks plump, healthy and hydrated the next morning.
Since I have been wearing a mask more often these days, I have noticed a lot more clogged pores, especially around the areas the mask covers. To combat this I have started using this as my second cleanser. This micellar water has both PHA and salicylic, which together help to keep skin clear. Think of poly hydroxy acids or PHAs as cousins of AHA or Alpha Hydroxy Acids, but with larger molecules. Because of this molecular size, they are gentler on the skin making them suitable even for sensitive skin. PHAs slough off the dead skin cells, helping to even out skin tone and texture. At the same time salicylic acid goes deep into the pores to remove any gunk that might be clogging them. My skin doesn’t feel dry after I have used it. I like to massage the cleanser in for at least 60 seconds, concentrating on the areas that have clogged pores or that feel bumpy so the salicylic acid has time to work its magic.
Depending on my mood and makeup up look, I do enjoy a matte lip. But a matte texture can sometimes make my lips look dry and thinner. Not this one. While it has a matte finish, it won’t make your lips look or feel dry. Instead it will actually make your lips look fuller and healthier. Unlike conventional lip plumping products, this lipstick has a special ingredient that has been clinically proven to enhance and prolong lip-plumping effects by promoting blood circulation without increasing temperature of the lips. I still feel a bit of mild tingling though, but it’s nowhere next to the lip burn I have felt with some other plumping formulas. It also helps smooth any lines on the lips so they look smooth, healthy and plump. Plus, it’s extremely hydrating thanks to a special technology that ensures a matte finish without drying lips. You do have to reapply a couple times though, but the shades are so pretty I don’t mind it.
