Here’s a fun fact: when I started my first job as a stylist at major media conglomerate, I wore chunky boots almost every day to work. This was 10 years ago, before the resurgence of athleisure and defiantly way before it became socially acceptable for us to wear sneakers to anywhere but the gym.
I was young and naïve and had no idea what was considered work-appropriate. Sure, I had amassed a hefty collection of gladiator sandals (it was 2010 after all) but exposed toes at the office just didn’t feel like the right attire. Plus, I was going to be doing a lot of leg work, lugging suitcases all over Orchard Road and didn’t want to put those toes in harm’s way.
So as I sat in front of my humble shoe cupboard in frustration, I spied a pair of dusty Dr Martens Chelsea boots I had purchased at a recent sale. To me, they were the Goldilocks of shoes. Casual, but not so much that it hindered my work and formal enough to still wear to the office or to a last-minute event.
So when Prada’s Autumn/Winter ’19 collection rolled out in February, I rejoiced seeing those familiar tread soles, juxtaposed with evening gowns no less. The ones on the runway even featured tiny little pocket bags that wearers can choose to strap on… and fit the leftovers that your tiny bag can’t fit, I guess? And with the party season just around the corner, we think it’s a perfect way to dress down those fun party dresses you’ll be wearing.
