Heralding fashion’s return to maximalism, J.W Anderson at Loewe paired a colourful feathered top with a black knit skirt while dramatic over-the-top feathered dresses were seen at Marc Jacobs. There were feathered sandals at Valentino and mini dresses with oversized feathered shoulders at Celine. Feathers are a fun accent that we’ve seen on the spring/summer 2019 runways, but how does one wear such a fabulous “look at me” outfit for the everyday?
We got two real women to try this trend by wearing a feathered double breasted blazer dress and a pencil skirt to the office. Surprisingly, there weren’t that many “what is she wearing” stares from strangers on the street, but colleagues did notice the dressier pieces of clothing.
Fintech startup Account Manager Yan Ling wore the double breasted feather trim blazer dress to a networking session in the morning before heading to the office at Changi Business Park. This formal looking blazer dress is functional with the detachable feather hem, but it proved to be tricky with the plunging neckline and mini length. “It’s way too short to wear to work, you’d be able to see my boobs and butt if I didn’t wear a dress underneath,” said Yan Ling. “None of my male colleagues noticed,” she added. But how wearable are feathers for the everyday? “Nobody really said the feathers were strange, it’s more the length that my colleagues picked up on. I’d wear this blazer with the feathers again, but definitely with a pair of pants.”
How would people in the CBD react to a feathered skirt? In house legal counsel Joan definitely had her doubts wearing the knee length pastel pink skirt decorated with feathers to the office, but decided to give it a go on casual Friday. In a wave of OL dresses and denim jeans, she definitely looked more dressed up and girly than the rest of the CBD crowd, but no one took a double take at what she was wearing during lunch hour. “Ohhhhhhh, that’s the first (and only) thing a colleague had to say about my skirt,” said Joan. In an office full of female lawyers, they concluded that the feathers weren’t a big deal, just the high shine satin finish and thigh-high side slit that made it an unconventional piece of clothing to wear to work. “Maybe if it was in black with black feathers, it would look more formal and suitable for work, but I’d definitely wear a feathered mini-skirt for a party on New Year’s Eve,” said Joan.
