Nineties kids: remember when all we did after school (aside from watching TV, but that was subject to our mother’s mood) was sit in front of the fan and read? This was, of course, before an Internet connection became a household staple. And before we discovered Neopets… which was probably our first introduction to addiction.
When it came to books, the Goosebumps horror series by R. L. Stine was extremely popular among my group of friends. We didn’t mind renting other titles from the library, but all of us would strive to own Goosebumps books, and needless to say we all became pretty skilled at begging.
There was also Give Yourself Goosebumps, a choose-your-own-adventure type of book series. If we ended up dead, we’d usually flip back to the previous page cos, well, ain’t nobody got time to restart.
If you miss the days of sitting in bed and choosing your own adventure, here’s a head’s up: Netflix will soon be launching interactive episodes where the viewer decides how the story unfolds. Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale launches globally today, Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile hits the screens July 14, and while it’s for kids, there’s no harm checking it out in the name of nostalgia.
