When it comes to K-pop concerts, it seems every group has its own winning formula. For Super Junior, it’s their hilarious banters with the crowd. For Infinite, it’s their sharp dance moves and fan service.
For K-pop boy band EXO, who was in town yesterday for a three-hour concert, they reprised their old formula of incorporating water into their choreography, while at the same time, introducing new ones such as acoustic performances.
Even with only eight members – Lay was not present due to a conflicting schedule in China – Suho, Xiumin, Chen, Baekhyun, D.O., Kai and Sehun put up a performance that was worthy of the $288 price tagged to the most expensive category.
Here are some of the highlights of EXO PLANET #3 – THE EXO’rDIUM – in SINGAPORE.

During their last tour, Kai and Sehun had a dance segment where they danced in a puddle of water. This time round, they reprised the same concept for “One and Only”. But that wasn’t the only time the members got wet. This time round, there was water cascading from above during “White Noise” (although the members managed to get away dry) and “Lightsaber”, which saw some members getting drenched. The result? Very happy EXO-Ls (the official name of EXO’s fan club).
“To be honest, you’re not allowed to throw things on stage because of safety reasons,” he told fans. “It’s the rules.” Just when you thought he was chiding fans, he added, “But I always anticipate the encore stage [for the gifts].” The singer had gleefully picked up a water gun and filled it with water, while ignoring Suho’s calls for him to come back. Exasperated, Suho said, “Baekhyun, what are you doing? Do you want to die?”
“Actually, I got a cramp in my leg during the EDM section, so I couldn’t jump that high. I apologise.” Judging from the way he soldiered on, no one could have guessed he was in pain. But he assured fans that he would be OK after getting a massage.
Remember that iconic fancam from their Bangkok concert where D.O. was playing with a rubber toy and accidentally made it look like a penis? This time round, he didn’t make any phallic shapes, but still had a ball of a time playing with the random rubbery toys that fans threw on stage.
During the acoustic version of “My Turn To Cry”, Sehun accidentally dropped his mic while trying to shift it to his other hand. Chen, who was singing his lines, coolly bent down to pick it up for the rapper without missing a beat. What a pro!
When the former was asked what he liked about Singapore, he said, “Every time I come here, I would eat pepper crab.” He added in English, “I like pepper crab.” Baekhyun, who has a habit of imitating his fellow members, didn’t pass up the opportunity to mimic D.O. by saying in the same deadpan tone, “You like pepper crab.” D.O. played on and said “Yes, yes, yes” but when Baekhyun relentlessly mimicked him again, he looked unimpressed and chose to ignore the singer.
Baekhyun revealed that compared to chilli crab, he likes the mantou that comes with it. He even polled the fans to find out which they preferred, and surprisingly, fans chose mantou over chilli crab. Influential, indeed. Chen, however, said he preferred the crabs and questioned fans about their choice, “Is it because you guys are too lazy to eat the crabs?”
Before performing their rap song, “Together”, the trio asked fans what they wanted the members to talk about. Xiumin attempted to listen to fans’ requests but ended up imitating the fans’ squeals, while saying, “I don’t understand what you guys are saying.” His imitation caused Sehun and Chanyeol to collapse on the ground in laughter.
Sehun told the duo that he wanted snacks for his dog, Vivi, as his birthday gift. Chanyeol agreed and said, “We can buy it for you. Maybe 2,000 boxes.” When Sehun bargained for 5,000 boxes, Chanyeol said, “But you have to finish everything in a month. You have to eat with her.” Flabbergasted, Sehun asked the audience, “How should I react to that?”
Chanyeol revealed he is into bowling these days, and even hit 270 points last week. “I’m going to try to be a professional bowler in three months.” When asked to show off his skills, Chanyeol used a water bottle as a bowling ball and tried to hit the bowling pin, fellow member Xiumin. The latter gamely mimicked a bowling pin and pretended to fall over. Amused, Chanyeol told him, “You even look like a bowling pin today!”
While the group didn’t redo the choreography to make up for Lay’s absence, it’s obvious that they had to work out where the members stood to avoid any missed spots. And perhaps all the rearrangement got D.O. confused because while singing “3.6.5”, the singer went to the wrong side of the stage and was happily interacting with the fans until Chanyeol, who was supposed to be at that area, kicked him in the butt and motioned for him to go to the other side. He realised his mistake and hastily ran to the other side.
From rubber toys to giant sunglasses and a taiyaki headgear, the dancer went around picking up random gifts and wearing them during the encore stage. Too cute!
While singing the acoustic version of “Lady Luck”, D.O.’s voice cracked while trying to hit a high note, inciting laughter among the members. Chanyeol, who was playing the guitar behind him, couldn’t bite back his laughter, and even Kai, who was dancing with Sehun behind the members burst into laughter and later placed his hands on D.O.’s shoulders in a reassuring way.
