You might think life is all peaches and cream for Korean celebrities who are bagging awards, topping charts and landing movie roles left and right, but newsflash: their lives are not as glitzy as their stage costumes and makeup. It’s a competitive scene, regardless whether you’re on top or a rookie trying to be a hitmaker. And they not only have to worry about making hits, but also their looks (which often leads to them going on strict diets), pleasing the fans and naysayers and well, everything else.
This much was obvious during Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon Instagram Q&A in June 2019, when she had to answer to naysayers and explained her mental health condition.
She accepted questions from the readers, answering them frankly, but her short answers, which comprised of mostly “no”, ticked some people off. One person asked whether she couldn’t say anything else besides no. When she explained that she had been feeling down the past days, someone asked, “Is it bipolar? Tsk tsk”. Taeyeon responded, “No, I’m suffering from depression. I’m working hard to get better with treatments and antidepressants. Whether it’s depression or bipolar disorder, please don’t ‘tsk’ at others. Like someone said previously, it’s disrespectful. They’re all patients who are suffering.”
Taeyeon is not the only Korean celebrity who are battling mental health issues. Scroll through the gallery to find out which celebs are also fighting their own battles.
