When he learnt a new Singlish word and used it at every opportunity.
“I learnt a lot of Singlish yesterday. You guys always put lah at the end of your sentences,” he said. The host offered to teach him a new Singlish word, “abuden”, which got fans tickled. Upon seeing the fans’ reaction, he looked confused and said, “You guys seem to like [that word].” He finally seemed to understand the reason for the crowd’s reaction after the host put the word into context, and consequently, he couldn’t stop using the word himself! At one point, when the host asked him if it was tough acting in the traditional costume for his recent drama The Emperor: Owner of the Mask, he wittily replied, “Abuden! It was very heavy and it was difficult to act behind the mask. And sometimes the mask slipped, so people couldn’t see my expression. But after training myself, when I removed the mask, my facial expressions became more detailed. In hindsight, it [trained] me to more expressive in future, so it was a good experience.”
When he doled out a lot of fan service
When it comes to fan service, L is on top of his game. During the games segment, he hugged each one of the four lucky fans who managed to snag an opportunity to act out scenes from The Emperor: Owner of the Mask with him on stage. The scenes they had to mimic ranged from learning writing from a fan to walking arm-in-arm with another. When asked to choose a winner out of the quartet, who would get a personalised autographed postcard with her name on it, he decided that they were all deserving of the gift and declared them all as winners.
When he gave serious life advice
Prior to the show, fans who wanted to seek advice from the Infinite member could write their problems on a slip of paper and drop it off at the door. Out of these submissions, three were chosen and L personally went up to the fans to dish out advice. When asked how to be more positive, he told the fan, “Usually, I have a lot of negative thoughts. But I think having a positive mind is important. As you know, it’s quite difficult to change negative perspective into a positive one. Maybe you could seek advice from others or yourself. You can also look for ways to be more positive. For me, personally, it’s difficult to be positive. But I think like all other things, it involves a lot of steps. If you’ve tried a lot of things and you think it’s not working, don’t give up because even if it’s not working 99 per cent of the time, there’s still a one per cent chance that it will happen.”
When he tried to give advice to a fellow cat owner
A fan revealed that her cat seems to ignore her and asked L, who has a Russian Blue named Byul, what she should do. He told her, “Cats usually spend a lot of time alone, so they usually like it when people approach them. Do you pet him a lot? (Fan: Yes) (Pauses and laughs awkwardly) Well, then it’s different from Byul. Maube you can give him more love. And if you suddenly stopped, then he might be surprised and get excited the next time you approach him.” He sheepishly added, “I don’t know if that’s good advice.”
When he showed off the photos he took
When it comes to L, don’t expect blurry photos. The singer often goes around with a DSLR to take impressive shots. He showed off some of his works during the fan meeting, which included a breathtaking sunset scene in Los Angeles, the nightscape of New York and photos that he took in Singapore, including the mandatory touristy shot of the Merlion with Marina Bay Sands in the background. He also shared a shot of our local breakfast, kaya toast, and revealed that he bought some kaya jam to bring back to Korea. When told by fans that kaya jam was available at Ya Kun Kaya Toast’s Gangnam outlet, he looked surprised and exclaimed, “Is there? Why didn’t I know?”
When he got awkward when asked to sing a Singapore song
After L let on that he knows one Singapore song, the host didn’t pass up the opportunity to ask him to show off his singing skills. As the fans waited in anticipation, the singer-actor got awkward and told fans, “Everyone is too quiet! Please clap.” However, an applause wasn’t what he had in mind. When the audience applauded for him, he said, “Not this clap!” He added, “Like this!”, before clapping to the beat. He eventually managed to sing a few lines off “Singapura, Sunny Island”, which he previously sang with his Infinite members during the group’s concert here in 2013.
When he declared his own “photo time”
In one game session, fans participated in a game where they had to answer “yes” or “no” to questions related to the singer. After a few rounds, there were still more than 10 fans who qualified for the next round, prompting the singer to give up (“This will never end!” he laughed) and instead gifted all fans with a “photo time”, during which he walked from one end of the stage to the other to give fans opportunities to snap photos of him. Towards the end of the fan meeting, he even walked down the aisle to get closer to fans! A+ for fan service!
