Even Kim Jong Kook wants to work with BTS, K-pop’s “it” export of the moment. The Running Man gagman declared his ambitions to focus on his singing roots this year, and named the Korean boy band as one of his choice collaborators.
“BTS is really popular. They are really good at everything. I want to do a lot of things with the idols. They came on [Running Man] once; they are kind and good kids,” Jong Kook said.
In town for a press conference and the Viu x Samsung Galaxy Exclusive Fan Party at the Flower Dome on Friday, Jong Kook addressed the local media in fluent English throughout the press conference. Scroll through for all the highlights.
He does not have a girlfriend – or a child – in L.A.
“I don’t have a kid over there. My mum really loves L.A. I love it there. I have a lot of friend over there. When I have free time, I go there and chill. L.A. is similar to Singapore — good weather, nice people, good food. I don’t go there for a girlfriend.”
He is ready to get hitched
“I really want to get married. I don’t know when it will happen. But I don’t want to date in [full view of the] public. I’m OK, [but] for my girl, she will be not comfortable. I’ll let you know [if I get married]. I promise you.”
He thinks Tom Cruise was very professional on Running Man
“It was really exciting. Tom Cruise is a superstar. He came on our show [and] was really professional. We shot for an hour, he played really well; he tried his best. I really learnt a lot from him. [The cast of Mission: Impossible – Fallout] tried their best [although] it was a really short time.”
He wants to invite this guest back on Running Man
“Jackie Chan. He was my idol when I was young. We filmed for almost five to six hours; he was really good. He did everything we wanted. He was a professional superstar. I want to see him again. Hi, Jackie Chan!”
His nickname is “health preacher”
“I just want everyone to be healthy, that is my goal. I want to tell people, ‘If you want to live long, you need to take care of your body, workout and lead a healthy life.’”
He eats more than boiled chicken breast
“I don’t have a strict diet. People think I only drink water and [eat boiled] chicken breast. Before my workout, I eat anything. But after my workout, I eat healthy, [so I] eat chicken breast. I want to tell you guys to eat healthy — less sodium, less sugar. Eat for your health, not for your body, figure.”
The one punishment he hates on Running Man
“Eating a lot of junk food. A lot of people don’t think it is a punishment [but] for me, it’s horrible. Too much cake and sweet things is really bad for me. (When asked if he has cheat days.) I eat a whole cake on my cheat day. I like chocolate cake.”
He’s addicted to his mobile phone
“When we do the show Running Man, we can’t use our phones for a couple of hours [and] I feel like I am almost dying. I don’t know since when I got addicted to my phone. People say that we are addicted to our phones. I don’t think we are addicted. It’s [just] become really useful in our lives. (Which is a worst punishment, life without workout or your mobile phone?) Of course, workout.”
He started social media for you. Yes you, overseas fans reading this post
“Initially, I didn’t like being on [social media]. After I started Running Man, I got a lot of foreign fans. I need to connect with foreign fans. I decided to do SNS [because] I want to share my life to fans, that’s why I started it.”
He wants to return to his singing roots
“I want to give my singing career another go. This year, I want to work on my album [and sing]. I’m going to have concert in Korea. I’ve done a lot of different styles of music. I’ve done music for 23 years. I was in the idol group Turbo. I got old, [so] it’s not easy to do young music. I need partners like BTS, idols groups, R&B singers. I want to do a lot of collaborations – that’s the key to making different music.”
