Lee Seung Gi is back in action. The South Korean singer-actor ORD-ed last October, grew out his hair, took on variety gigs, and is now flying around the region to meet fans.
Two years in the military has done good for his mind and body: He looks leaner and fitter at his fan meet in Singapore on Saturday. But perhaps part of the reason could have been the exercise he did in the morning.
Regimented military life has not dimmed his popularity nor his cheekiness and charisma. This much was obvious by the turnout of over 1,400 fans at Zepp@BigBox for his fan meeting last night. He turned on his charms by serenading the audience with ballads and reenacting K-drama scenes with lucky fans.
While some artists prefer to take a breather after two years of national service, Seung Gi prefers to meet his fans sooner. He said, “Rather than taking a break, I was eager to meet all of you. To me, meeting my fans is like taking a break.” Nawww…
Here are the highlights of the fan meet in Singapore.
He wants a kissing scene with Suzy
Actor Lee has returned to the film set! He updated fans on his schedule, revealing he has begun filming for Vagabond, a spy action drama. “You will get to see a new Lee Seung Gi. This is my first time trying something that is not so mystical and closer to reality. It has a lot of action scenes, like the [James] Bond series,” he says.
And what’s a K-drama without a leading lady? He’ll be reuniting with his Gu Family Book co-star, Suzy. But fans can be rest assured there is no intimate scene – for now.
“The script is pretty [intense]; there’s no time for kissing. But I really wish we had [a kissing scene],” jokes Seung Gi, with a glint in his eye.
His criteria list for his ideal girl is very long
The Nation’s Little Brother is all grown up! Seung Gi reveals he wants to ditch his old title and claim a new one: the Nation’s Boyfriend. To be more than worthy of the title, he obviously needs a girlfriend.
During the fan meet, he sought out a fan who could be Singapore’s Sam Jang (Oh Yeon Seo’s character and Seung Gi’s love interest in recent Netflix original series A Korean Odyssey). The eligible bachelor listed down the qualities of his ideal girl, in order to pick a lucky fan who fit the bill to come onstage.
Here’s what he revealed his preferences to be: a lady with long hair, below 167cm in height, with manicured fingers and undyed locks. He also likes girls who wear skirts and heels, but skips the earrings (we wonder why). And oh, he likes girls who enjoy exercising. That’s all. Not that hard, right?
He attracts couples
While most fans would do anything to have a moment with their idol on stage, we can’t say the same about one attendee who was picked (by a cameraman!) to reenact a back hug scene with Seung Gi: a man who was accompanying his girlfriend to the fan meet. But we must say the guy deserves the Boyfriend of the Year award for being a good sport!
Obviously, the interaction between unlikely pairing became one of the highlights of the event, prompting Seung Gi to say, “I didn’t know you guys like this kind of stuff. This is the biggest reaction I’ve gotten from the audience since the show started.”
Who knows, this “sacrifice” could only deepen their love and he might propose at the next Lee Seung Gi fan meet, just like the male fan who proposed to his girlfriend at the singer’s last fan meet in Singapore in 2013. If you’re wondering, yes, the 2013 couple is now married and has a two-year-old son.
He makes a mean cuppa
Did you know Seung Gi is a coffee connoisseur? He revealed that he usually starts off his mornings at the film set by brewing his own drip coffee, and he drinks two to three cups a day. For the record, he likes it black – Americano or Kopi-o Kosong in Singapore coffee speak.
Seung Gi displayed his coffee-making skills at the fan meet, making hand drip coffee for a Taiwanese fan, who flew in specially for him.
Envious of the fan? You have every reason to be because it’s not likely you will get to drink coffee made by the actor. After all, he has no plans to open a café. He said, “I want to focus on my showbiz career, so I’m not thinking of a second career or opening a restaurant.”
NS life was tough for him (like it was for every other guy)
We got a glimpse of the gruelling military training Seung Gi went through after watching a video screened at the fan meet. The training included leopard-crawling on a wet beach and eating lunch while balancing a rubber dinghy boat on their heads.
He said, “It was a 24-hour hell training. The boat weighed about 230kg. It would have been more comfortable if everyone was the same height. I was the tallest so a lot of the weight was borne by me,” says Seung Gi, who towers at 1.82m.
He went on to reveal how being in the army has changed him. He said: “I grew to become a much better person after the two years in the army. I gained a lot of confidence, and it’s helped to boost my physique too. I filmed the Princess and The Matchmaker before the army, so I look a bit plump then.”
He promises to still be a celebrity for another 34 years
“It’s been really long. But it feels like only four years since I debuted. It’s already 14 years, I can’t believe it. I’m can be here today because of my fans,” says Seung Gi.
When quizzed whether he’ll still be actively promoting as a celebrity in another 14 years, he says: “Not just 14 years, I’ll be here for another 34 years, till all of you are grandmothers and grandfathers.”
