Even if you were into K-pop a decade ago, you’d probably know of SHINee. After all, the K-pop group made their debut in 2008, when their youngest member Taemin was just 15 years old. Today, he turns 25 – and his charms hasn’t changed a bit. If anything, he just got sexier, more mature and more talented – he’s even released solo albums! Here are six things about him we discovered for the past 10 years.
Taemin has been named as one of the most hardworking idols time and again. His diligence is further highlighted through the marked improvement in his vocals. Starting out as a main dancer with a few singing lines, his vocals are now stable during live performances, even when he’s holding his own on stage. He also proved his vocal prowess by appearing on reality TV singing competition for singers, Immortal Song 2.
Taemin may have grown up in the spotlight, but he hasn’t let the popularity go to his head, and remains loyal to his friends. Hotshot’s Timoteo, who used to train with him in SM Entertainment, revealed how Taemin had helped him on reality idol competition, The Unit: “When I was having a hard time, he never made me felt like I was lacking and treated me well. It’s my goal to repay him later. To be honest, repaying him might be a higher priority than being a good son to my parents. He did so much for me.”
As the youngest member in the group, the aegyo (act cute) role naturally goes to Taemin. But let’s be real, the guy is effortlessly cute – even if he didn’t mean to do aegyo. And you can see how much the older members adore him for it! Their choreographer, Greg, said in an interview that although Taemin sees himself as a man now, the older members still view him as a kid.
When asked why he doesn’t do reality shows, he explains on his solo reality show the TAEMIN : Xtra cam, “It’s only called ‘reality’ but almost everything has been decided beforehand. You get your makeup done and film in a pretty state. I don’t want to film a reality show that has already been set.”
While some celebrities have to be reminded by their managers to watch their behaviour, Taemin practices self-censorship and self-management when it comes to his image. He quotes an example on the TAEMIN : Xtra cam, “I’d want to spit something out, but then I think, ‘But this is not the right image…’ I manage and restrain myself.”
His clumsy side
When you see him dance on stage, ‘clumsy’ wouldn’t be the word that comes to mind when it comes to describing him. But off-stage, Taemin has a talent for losing things. His fellow members and friends have attested that he has a habit of misplacing things, including this mobile phone. He also related a time where he had to wear bedroom slippers to the airport because he mistakenly packed his shoes into the check-in luggage!
