There’s 50 Shades of Grey. And then there are real-life dangerous liaisons. Three women share their stories of forbidden love and how it changed their lives.
THE CAREER PATH NOT CHOSEN
Jess*, 22, almost had an affair with her boss
“I was a Legal Assistant and my boss, Tim*, was married with two young kids. We always worked long hours and it wasn’t unusual for us to share takeaway dinners together in the office. I crushed hard on him, because he had a classic chiselled chin, great hair, and a crooked smile that gave me butterflies. At one gathering at the office, we all started drinking and, one-by-one, everyone left until it was just us. I had fantasised for this moment, and imagined that I would be in his lap in his office chair, doing the nasty. It wasn’t gong to happen, since he had pictures of his family all over his room! As tempting as it was, we ended drinking for about half an hour before we called our own Ubers and went home. Something did spark that night, because the next few days he kept coming over to my desk to ask for pointless things. He even asked me out for another drink. I told him bluntly that I would never get involved with a married man. We stayed friends and now I’m even close to his wife!”
Amanda*, 32, fell for her husband’s sibling
“I’d always gotten along with my ex-husband’s older brother, who was really charming. One night, talks and drinks became a make-out sesh. I put an end to it the next morning, but it lit a fire that had long been extinguished in my marriage. I eventually divorced my husband and moved on, and no one really found out about what happened that night.”
Susie*, 28, got involved with her BFF’s step-dad
“Joan*, and I had been friends for the longest time, and I knew her family well. When we were 17, her parents got divorced and not long after that, her mom met her step-dad Jim*. To give you an idea of how dreamy he was, he was the spitting image of George Clooney. I never told Joan how I thought he was cute, and nothing ever happened. Fast forward to Joan’s engagement party when we were both 25, and I found that Jim was hitting on me like crazy. As I helped with the arrangements and the party, we struck up conversation and the topics got quite hot. At the time, his marriage with Joan’s mum was rocky, but I never followed up or responded to his texts or advances after that. Eventually he did get caught with another woman, and it seemed that he had cheated quite a fair bit. I’m glad it wasn’t me and that I didn’t act upon our whims.
