La La Land swept up the most number of awards at the Golden Globes yesterday morning. Seven, as a matter of fact, smashing the record for the most Golden Globes won by a single film.

The musical rom-com starring Ryan Gosling (yes please) and Emma Stone revolves around a musician and aspiring actress falling in love. Nothing out of the ordinary, but ratings have been through the roof – a testament to the superb directing and acting.

Many have also expressed the sentiment that it’s the type of movie most people can relate to. And that always works.

Here are five things to know about the film:

1. Emma Watson was supposed to star

She however turned down the role to act in Beauty and the Beast. The thing is, Gosling turned down the role of Beast to be in  La La Land.

2. The film is quite similar to Emma Stone’s real-life history

La La Land is set in Los Angeles, and Stone’s character is a college dropout trying to pursue a career in acting. Stone had dropped out of school and moved to LA to pursue acting when she was just 15.

3. Ryan Gosling played all of his piano sequences by himself

He practised two hours a day, six days a week. Co-star John Legend said he was “jealous” of how quickly Gosling learnt to play so well.

4. John Legend picked up the guitar for his role

Adding to his very impressive musical skill set.

5. There are two reasons for the film’s title.

One, the film is set in LA. Two, it refers to the stereotypical view of Hollywood being a dream.

6. This is the third film to star Gosling and Stone

They previously acted together in Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and Gangster Squad (2013).
